Here's a new front pager from Gavinmac
An Open Letter to William E. Todd, the new U.S. Ambassador to Cambodia
''Dear Mr. Todd:
I hear that you will soon be arriving in Phnom Penh to serve as the new American ambassador to Cambodia. Let me be the first to wish you a hearty “Welcome!” Or, as they say in the local Khmer language, “Heyyouyouyouwhereyougo!...........''

Classic stuff GM. Hope he reads it, if he's any kind of a decent sort he'll have a good laugh.
GM,
While I did get a chuckle out of your welcome article I tend to agree with Bars............. that name is way to long. You are pretty loose and easy with your terminology. Working in a hostess bar is a far cry from someone being trafficked. Someone who is less than versed in these things ie a new ambassador could easily get the wrong message. Maybe next time it might be a god idea to think about what you are saying before you say it.

I have to call bullshit on this, having owned a bar briefly and had many friends that are/were FSOs, I know this is patently FALSE...barforsalecambodia wrote: it ain't the snooty FSOs that are going to the bars and clubs anyways. hopefully the impending gavinmac-induced clampdown is not wider than that.
Now this is spot on....and a certain Undersecretary of State from the US said as much during the last crackdown that landed brit Danny in the slam, among others. The crackdown ended immediately afterwards. The local authorities realized that the anti-trafficking figures they were padding going after hostess bars would no longer count towards their rating in the trafficking in persons reports put out by the State Department. Funny that.barforsalecambodia wrote:also, please don't conflate human trafficking with hostess bars. they are totally different

Fair enough. I didn't mean to suggest that most hostess girls are trafficked. To the contrary, most seem to be there by "choice," although sometimes the choice is "come work here and get groped for money or stay unemployed and you and your family starve."
I once met a girl who worked for a few weeks at a well known hostess bar who seemed quite uncomfortable being there and who I suspect did not know the nature of the bar/restaurant she would be working in when she moved up from Prey Veng.

i don't agree with some of the letter. it's amusing to read but i do agree that is might send out the wrong message.
when you say ,"I didn't mean to suggest that most hostess girls are trafficked."
what does this suggest then?
"Speaking of prostitution, you should know that in recent years Phnom Penh has experienced an explosion in its number of “hostess bars.” Hostess bars are bars staffed exclusively by impoverished young women who are trained in a very “hands on” approach to customer service, both inside the bar and beyond. These bars are notorious fronts for prostitution, often frequented by sleazy sexpats, degenerate English teachers, and even embassy personnel."
and as far a s banning employees
"The ban would also let guys like me have more of those gloriously slutty 19 year-old women all to myself."
holding someone to a "higher" set of standards....that seems a bit hypocritical to me.

It was a pisstake, mate. GM didn't actually send this to the US Ambassador, it was satire, humour, something to amuse. It is funny because...oh forget about it. This is why GM has to move here, actually, he's tired of telling deadpan jokes and getting blank/confused looks in response. Americans...long in the tooth wrote:i don't agree with some of the letter. it's amusing to read but i do agree that is might send out the wrong message...

Some of you know already that President Obama is due here just after the November,2012 electoral cycle. He'll either be a 'lame duck',or have a fresh mandate going into an important ASEAN plenary in PPenh.
This visit will take most of Amb.Todd's time 'til this historic occasion for Cambodia--the first sitting President on Khmer soul. The pressure on the Hun Sen govt to button down every eyesore will fuel the next 12 months.
My sincere hope is that because of the 1st and 3rd genocides of Khmer people 1964-1997 ,we can cancel that phony loan to Lon Nol that the US govt says this 2012 Cambodian govt still owes with interest . The atrocities committed starting as we've recently learned with the secret Johnson bombings, and seamlessly into Kissinger/Nixon carpet bombing slaughter of most non Phnom Penh people sites throughout the entire country--genocide 101. This annihilated an aspiring nation attempting to use modernity & welcoming to global companionship.
The 3rd genocide from 1980-1997 is less known & I suggest the new Ambassador check the classified Embassy files on these horrific times--putting PolPot in power at the UN in a seat for Cambodia is just the beginning of a despicable discourse that even Noam Chomsky blushes when reminded of these three separate yet continuous pogroms. John Pilger's 1990 film Cambodia: The Betrayal, is what I'm referring, along with his seminal work "Year Zero"1979 & revisit 1993.
Mr Todd has been posted in Islamic countries with very strict laws-non Sharia is the exception. He has a DEA enforcement background in intelligence before that. One can only hope at his first Ambassadorial posting, the laid back gracious nature of Cambodia will encourage his staff to continue the use of music & US-Khmer synergies like Dengue Fever Band, in spreading goodwill between cultures. Possibly nothing transcends racism/bigotry faster than the vocals of Ms Nimol's soaring universal language.

Sounds like we need to draft an open letter to this President Black Obama about Cambodia as well ...raychristlTHC wrote:Some of you know already that President Obama is due here just after the November,2012 electoral cycle.

Dude, you keep referring to this 3rd Genocide between 1980-1997 - I can say without the slightest doubt that this is complete and utter bullshit. A genocide involves targeted systematic slaughter of large numbers of people. Where and when did this occur during this time period, and how many people were systematically slaughtered? Which group was targeted? I thought so. So put down your pipe and clear your head, this is a good reminder that I shouldn't smoke too much.raychristlTHC wrote:My sincere hope is that because of the 1st and 3rd genocides of Khmer people 1964-1997 ,we can cancel that phony loan to Lon Nol that the US govt says this 2012 Cambodian govt still owes with interest . As to the "1st genocide", when the hell was that? Are you referring to American bombing? That's not genocide, that's establishing democracy as far as I understand Americans. But seriously, I've never heard anyone refer to it as genocide, and highly doubt it meets that criteria. It was brutal and wrong, but when has the USA not been that way when it comes to their own interests?
As to your characterization of bombing every population center outside Phnom Penh, well, again, put down the bong and come to your senses. I'd suggest you look at the map of the bombing, check out http://www.cambodiaatlas.com/map and click on the bombing layer. Yes, there were areas that got creamed, usually those near the Vietnam border (Ho Chi Minh Trail) and especially places like the Parrot's Beak. But to suggest the bombing got everywhere there was a village is rather a stretch.
Now, I didn't know Obama was coming, so that was useful and informative.
