Sorry for the cut and paste job but I just saw this on the CBC website and thought it should be put up for everyone's consideration. Truly shocking and although the odds must be slim to none, I hope the SOBs that did this get brought to justice.
B.C. aid worker robbed, left for dead in Cambodia
Wednesday, January 14, 2009 | 12:31 AM ET
A violent mugging in Cambodia has left a humanitarian worker from Kamloops, B.C., in a coma fighting for his life, according to his friend and a hospital official.
Jiri Zivny had just withdrawn money from a bank machine on Friday shortly before he was assaulted, robbed, and left for dead on the street, his friend Monty Aldoff told CBC News on Tuesday.
The attack likely took place as Zivny was trying to drive off on his scooter.
"[He] went to the bank machine and was followed by bad people, attacked, beaten in the head, robbed and stripped of his clothes and left for dead in the ditch for hours," Aldoff said.
"The doctor said he was hit twice severely in the head, so we suspect once while he was on the motorcycle and he crashed and then they jumped out and clubbed him again."
'We are trying to raise enough money to medevac him back to Canada.'
— Monty AldoffZivny was found by local police hours after the attack, Aldoff said.
Taing Sovanna, a physician at Phnom Penh's Calmette hospital, confirmed to CBC News that Zivny is currently a patient and was brought in unconscious with severe head wounds.
"Our prediction is he is in serious condition," Taing told CBCNews.ca on Wednesday in a telephone interview. "He is on a respiratory machine."
Aldoff, Zivny and a few other aid workers began their humanitarian mission in southeast Asia in mid-November, delivering medical supplies to orphans on behalf of the International Humanitarian Hope Society.
Most of the group returned to B.C. over Christmas, except for Zivny and another worker who stayed on in Cambodia, Aldoff said.
Trust fund set up for care
Zivny was planning to work with the orphans for another month, Aldoff said, but his friends now want him home so he can receive better medical attention.
Aldoff said the Canadian Embassy in Cambodia has been contacted but an official said no help from the Canadian government was available at this point.
"We are trying to raise enough money to medevac him back to Canada," he said.
A trust fund has been set up in Zivny's name through the International Humanitarian Hope Society to raise money to pay for his return.
About $100,000 will be needed to bring him home once his condition improves.

I hope Mr. Zivny recovers and my thoughts go out to his family and friends. Has anyone heard anything about this crime?
P.S. If you click on the link, there is an audio file which gives more details about what happened. The Canadian government hasn't offered any assistance so far. As one guy put it in the comments section, PM Harper should seriously offer the use of his private jet (not holding my breath though ). _________________ Music is the best - FZ |

Nothing in the Post or Daily today. I guess we'll have to wait a couple of days as they report this kind of news by copying it from the Koh Santepheap or the Rasmey Kampuchea (the Khmer daily papers). So if it makes the Khmer papers tomorrow then the Daily may have it as a one inch page 31 story on Friday. Possibly.
It would be interesting to know where this happened and at what time of day.

They didn't get him health insurance? That sucks. _________________ The unofficial 440 Twitter page |

Why don't they just take him to Bangkok. There are excellent hospitals there. That long of a flight in his condition is not a good thing.
Note to everyone... When at an ATM machine look around you before you get your money. This seems like a sure fire way of robbing people and getting money for sure.

Scant consolation for the poor chap's friends and family, but it's fortunately still rare for something as rotten as this to happen and I'd much rather be going home late in PP than in London.
To my best recollection, the last similar incident involved a French woman who was pulled off the back of a moto in a bag snatching incident mid last year, cracked her skull on impact and sadly died. _________________ The unofficial 440 Twitter page |

Everyone, thanks very much for the feedback so far.
Apparently the health organization had provided insurance during the time that Jiri Zivny was directly working for them. However, it sounds like he was on his own in Cambodia to visit more children's orphanages.
Jiri Zivny was at a ATM in a town located 4 hours from the capital. What other provincial towns have ATMs? Siem Reap, Snookyville or maybe Battembang? I am trying to find out which town and what time it could have happened. However, it appears that a number of hours had passed before he could be moved to Phnom Penh.
People are trying to help Jiri Zivny get to Bangkok as soon as his condition stabilizes. Johnny 99 thanks very much for that idea. Jiri's friends appreciate the confirmation that Bangkok is the best move in the near term. _________________ Music is the best - FZ |

A hard rain's gonna fall, trust me.
It won't be long before even the retard criminals figure out that in Cambodia, crime pays. Times are hard, police are few, badly equipped and totally non-motivated, and the pickings are easy. Added to the problem is that if you do get caught, you can always bribe your way out. And if no-one does anything about some psycho adolescent sons of generals shooting paintballs, why would they bother with a barang unless they're attached to an embassy? I'm amazed that the city isn't already like a war zone. |

What has really upset me was the story yesterday about two young girls 11 and 14 who were raped, bludgeoned horrendously and then hung from trees out in the provinces. The local constabulary was a single guy in a wooden hut and the bodies were cremated before any "forensic" ( yes yes I know....lacking) work could be done. I cannot believe some NGO has not brought DNA units in to the country- or have they. What are the chances those perps will be caught now ?

Sadder still about that one, is that the same thing had happened to a neighbour of theirs a little while beforehand. Sounds very much like a sicko located in the same village but without the forensics, hard to track them down. _________________ Cambodia's All-Terrain Champion - the Jacked Camry |

As far as the ATM mugging goes, the breaking news is that it was in Sihanoukville.
DAS reported on it yesterday and there are some comments you might like to ponder:

What's the source of that disgusting horror story K and JC mention - is it online? _________________ "What is important in life is to work as little as possible so we can enjoy it more."

Makes a lot more sense now I know it happened in that rough shithole of a port town rather than PP. For the gazzilionth time - Snooky ain't no languid beach resort. _________________ This shit iz fo' real |

Andy,
it was in the CD yesterday along with...
Sorry to get for a second but..........
A fucking hilarious ( sorry ) story about a shoot-out between a bunch of South Koreans over a bad business partnership in Siem Reap. They were all in a car going out to dinner together when they started arguing about the business and then guns started blazing resulting in one or two deaths. Apparently, can you believe it, the shooting inside the car caused it to swerve off the road ! I love the way they write stuff up in the CD !
The business ?
Selling flip flops to tourists at Angkor Wat .
I think the police were saying they are going to let them go in the hope they will shoot a few more SKs.

| What's saying he wasn't out drinking, went to get some more cash, crashed while firing up his moto and then was relieved of his possessions? |

That was in the Daily about a week ago. One of the girls had her eyes cut out too, its common in these type of attacks as there is a belief that the victim will remember them or something. Obviously someone in the neighborhood, Id be suspicious of the guy who first spotted the bodies on a hill a few kilometeres away. |
