Every year I get loads of messages on Facebook on my birthday. Never hear from the buggers the rest of the year. But people see that it’s my birthday and feel that they should say something. I wonder if it’s the same here, they see he has died and feel that they should add an insincere RIP.
It's not just that. Less than a year ago his partner was very sick, and there was a shortage of funds back then too. About ten posters, including me, stepped in at that time. donating money for his partner's treatment even though the outcome would be definite.
For me, and I can imagine for other posters as well, that was the reason not to step in this time. One can only, or wants to do only, so much for a person you know online only.
But don't forget this time nearly 1,000$ was donated by an unknown amount of posters, posters have visited him in the hospital, a wheelchair was arranged, a paid helper was arranged, his bank issues were solved and Rozz went out of her way to support him. The flak she receives here seems inappropriate to me, maybe aim it towards another poster for blaming others 'not stepping in' while trying to get a bike at a bargain from a guy in need.
Anyway, a lesson can be learned from this. 'Self insurance' has it limits and if you're knocked down without a really good friend, partner or kid you're fucked.
