His Khmer family members don't seem to know these 'facts' so maybe you should post some proof, as when I asked them they were quite upset.keeping_it_riel wrote:Well, you personally know the source and he has a 100% record on 440 over the last few years.hanky wrote:I'm also wondering whether this rumor is at all true.

To all those interested in the 'facts' James Sargeant is very much ALIVE and still in prison. Please accept this concrete information from his adult daughter writing this text in the UK.
Please can I ask that from now on only provide factual information when talking about someone being alive or dead. I was very upset to read this information at the weekend, it has taken me 3 days to receive accurate info from the British Embassy.
It has been difficult to ascertain any information regarding my fathers situation in Thailand, I used this forum to get upto date information, I guess I have learnt my lesson.
if anyone does have contact detials for his wife or children i would be grateful if anyone could get in contact.

Well Velcro, if you believe everything you read on an internet forum then more fool you. What this forum does and indeed has been doing for a approaching a decade is report back gossip, tittle tattle and rumors from within the expat community. Usually there is some truth in what gets leaked out via our site and often we get things absolutely spot on. However, just occasionally, as would appear to be the case here, the rumors turn out to be a large steaming pile of poo. I'd also remind people again that the source of this particular piece of news had a 100% success rate until last week, which is why we took the information seriously and I stuck my neck out by posting it.Velcro wrote:To all those interested in the 'facts' James Sargeant is very much ALIVE and still in prison. As for J suing us, please don't make me laugh. People don't successfully sue others for churning out misinformation, they successfully sue others for churning out misinformation that damages or sullies their reputations and good name. And as a serious criminal awaiting a trial at which he will surely be found guilty, J has no good name that could possibly be sullied. Ergo he cannot sue.

if you ever considered going into the medical profession, KIR, you made the right decision not to. Terrible bedside manner. The adult daughter isn't a criminal, so a little bit of softness in your response wouldn't have gone astray.

Dead or banged up for twenty years can be the same thing in a third world jail.
Then again with the kings pardon he may be lucky and be out in fifteen.
Cable guy thinks he remembers this guy in a merc.
No,the aussie miner who looked very similar had a silver 280CE.
This guy may have been able to buy a merc if he had found a better buyer for his coke.

Yeah, how about, "Sorry I erroneously reported that your Dad was dead. My bad."violet wrote:if you ever considered going into the medical profession, KIR, you made the right decision not to. On a separate note I think a little tact wouldn't go amiss on this forum sometimes, even dodgy geezers have families.

KIR I don't believe everything I read on an internet forum but I have been reading this forum long enough to have come to the conclusion that your posts are generally accurate especially when you reinforce a claim which you did in this case.
You made a mistake regarding an emotive subject and someone also trusting your credibilty has been stressed big time and I can understand their concern.
I think it would have been best to apologise for the error rather than try and defend your mistake.
I believed your report not because I read it on an internet forum but because YOU reported the news. Usually you would qualify your claims if you were not sure but in this instance you almost guaranteed it as fact .
I don't know the bloke , if he's good or bad but for those who do and care about him I am glad he is alive.

I've actually been chasing this matter up this morning with the local source. It seems the rumor started in Bangkok last week. Anyway, I happy to clarify by apologizing to his family for any unnecessary distress this has caused them,

We should adopt the "Koh Santepheap rule" where if it makes the front-page of this well respected news journal with the appropriate photographic evidence then an expat can be declared officially dead.
This would be a more accurate approach and I am sure would be more comforting to families to be able to identify their loved ones (unless they are a jumper or in a really bad accident).

This information comes from his Inlaws.
His wife is in jail in Phnom Penh waiting for the family to sell all there land to get her out.
Apparently outside their rented apartment in P.P.the Police had put tape over the door to keep people out.She removed the tape and went into the apartment which was enough to justify banging her in Jail .

This information was presented as fact by KIR, a moderator of this board.keeping_it_riel wrote:Update.
Jim has topped himself in the Bangkok Hilton while awaiting his trial.
Not a rumor or hearsay but cold hard fact.
On a number of occasions I have posted that I live in the same village as John Sargent and trusting that a moderator would not make such a post unless he had indisputable proof that is true I passed on the news to my wife who spoke to the family. They came to see me for help and I advised them to go to the British Embassy.
For John Sargents children to hear their Dad is dead only to be told that he is in fact alive has put myself and my wife in a terrible situation and put his family through hell.
OK its my fault for not double checking the information with the Embassy and had the information been from a forum member not a moderator I would not have passed on the news.
I assumed wrongly that the moderator would have the story confirmed before posting and I assumed that he had first hand information to make such a statement.
It is not a moderators job to play with peoples lives by presenting such devastating information as fact.
