Coffee Chains
I know there have been some threads about small coffee roasters, but what about the big chains? What are people's favorite coffee chains here, and why? Off the top of my head, there are:
Brown's
Starbucks
Costa
Amazon Cafe
Coffee Today
(Perhaps Tous les Jours or Eric Kayser could count)
The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf
Gloria Jean's
Joma
There may be more, but I think those are all of the major ones in Phnom Penh.

There's an Amazon opening soon in my shit hole town, which is kinda exciting. But I've never actually stepped foot in an Amazon. Do they only sell coffee, or snacks like sandwiches and cakes?

I saw the number of stores they have the other day, but forget the exact number. However I think they've had about 40 new openings this year. It's certainly been an crazy expansion.pedros wrote:There's an Amazon opening soon in my shit hole town, which is kinda exciting. But I've never actually stepped foot in an Amazon. However, I have still not entered one.
They have decent coffee at a realistic price.Miguelito wrote:I saw the number of stores they have the other day, but forget the exact number. AFAIK only do coffee and cakes
Browns would be my favourite chain here based on both coffee and their food and generally service is good

In typical Cambodian style 8 months ago there were precisely 0 'western' coffee shops in this 1 horse town, only fake Vietnamese rice, pork and coffee shacks.
Now there are 3 (all opening around the same time) and an Amazon coming soon.
No doubt another few be open doors before the end of the year, and most will close in 2018.

Amazon is a franchise, thus the huge number of recent openings. I don't drink coffee, but Amazon has changed that. I used to have a 2000r coffee every few days/weeks. Once in a blue moon I would go to Brown of I wanted to just sit in an air con setting and work on my laptop in a more "public" setting. I've always hated Brown as they're totally overpriced and I didn't get the hoo-ha about it. Amazon have totally undercut them so I'm loving it. Plus, their Espresso and Green Tea frappés are really nice. I always ask for 40% sugar and it tastes great. Lots of convenient locations as well for takeaway. The only thing I hate are their super heavy duty plastic containers. Nice because they're durable, but really?! I recycle mine by bringing the same one back all the time (I drew lines on it with a permanent marker so they recognise it). I get confused or weird looks quite often, but they'll reuse it for me and I now rarely have to explain my rational for it. The thought of all the plastic waste from all these coffee chains in just one day (just in Phnom Penh) worries the shit out of me. I used to have a recyclable container for the 2000r coffees, but some sellers are understandably reluctant as the size might differ from theirs...

No to the first - really ordinary, but EK - really good coffee and at $2.50 for a flat white, hard to beat.

Wow. Looks like Lexussmexus has had about 40% too much sugar!
There's an Amazon in SHV and my wife likes to go there with her cool Uni mates. Outside is full off Zoomers, Scoopys and if course black Dreams. They all used to go to Bobbi's Cafe (Or Boobies as my wife calls it. I've never corrected her because it's funny!) which is off the main road.
My favourite is Costa Coffee, which are just as prevalent as Starbucks in the UK and Ireland, and I did a little Gaelic jig when I spotted one at Aeon Mall! Woohoo!
It was like being in the old country again!
There's the newish (moved from a smaller shop) French place between the gas station and electrical store on Ekereach but the service is dire and they often forget what you've ordered. The Khmer female owner just sits chatting (In French) even though you're in plain view! I've never seen the barang owner lift a finger. Maybe he doesn't have a work permit. Plus it's full of bloody french!
I always go to Kampuchea Coffee on the road opposite CAB bank on Ekereach. Great coffee.

I too prefer Costa, although Starbucks is more well known to me, of course. My Khmer staff complain that it's too bitter, but I think that fits the Western palate well (I don't think they're allowed to change the flavoring, as it should remain consistent with the UK). However they don't offer soy milk -- I normally get an espresso or Americano, black, so not a problem, but sometimes go for a cappuccino and prefer soy.YaTingPom wrote:

I'm sure you can all relate, but the Khmers also think I'm insane when I'm with a group and they're all getting an iced coffee from someplace and I request no sugar.

i recently asked a seller (street) for an iced tea with no sugar and no milk. she understood me perfectly but was so flummoxed by the idea that she didn't think she had understood me. She said later.. .I have never heard anyone drink it like that. LOL

I like the espresso and green tea frappes too. How do I ask for 40% sugar please?
one thing about Amazon is they have khmer script on the menu boards with some English. I don't think they do that at Brown. Also, Amazon calls your drink number out in Khmer ... so it feels less Western focused. I like that.
I agree about the containers. I have only drunk a frappe from Amazon three times. I kept the containers. It is not okay that they are becoming rubbish.

on a related note, what are people's thoughts on the changes to Riverside?
A HUGE Eric Kaiser and now a HUGE Amazon.
Added to the other chains (pizza, etc.)
I realise that many posters probably go to lengths to avoid Riverside.... I am addressing my comments to those that drive past or visit there (frequently or infrequently)

Fun fact for the day: The UK is the only place in the world where Costa outsells Starbucks in regions where both are active. That's also partly because there are roughly twice as many Costas as there are Starbucks (1992 outlets for Costa vs 849 for Starbucks according to latest data I could find).YaTingPom wrote:My favourite is Costa Coffee, which are just as prevalent as Starbucks in the UK and Ireland
Still waiting for Cafe Nero, best cakes out of all 3 chains.
