Odd things that Barang do that raise Khmer eyes
Moving to Cambodia in the first place. (OK, that's changed quite a bit in the last decade.)

Not tiling walls when you build a house.
Not painting the house pink or fleuro yellow or purple
Putting windows in the shitter when you build
Replacing all 4 car tyres at the same time
Driving around with your dogs in the back of your truck
Not eating rice with your fingers

Yea, it would almost be interesting to have a thread on things that 10 years ago were strange to them, but have now become normal.mrdome wrote:Moving to Cambodia in the first place. (OK, that's changed quite a bit in the last decade.)
Someone else mentioned eating cheese. However, it's becoming more and more common (and not just for the French passport holders, but the growing middle class too).
How about wearing a helmet while riding a bike? I bet 10 years ago that raised eyebrows (especially for pedal bikes), but now it's normal enough.

Switching on the light of your car or motorbike at night, or at least between sunset and full darkness.
Going to the ATM to withdraw some money you saved before instead of selling that piece of jewellery and losing money on it.
Bringing your motorbike to the Honda shop after 5000 km and ask them to service it.
Wondering why the Cambodian kick boxers always win from the foreigner, unless the foreigner kicks the Khmer guy knockout.
Reading a book.
Not answering your phone when driving.
Buying the Honda dream series 2015 when the 2016 series is also available (though at a much higher price).
Sitting down buckled up after the wheels of the plane have touched the ground once.
Asking where the garbage bin is.
Catching a Tarantula in your house and take it to forest in a plastic bag to release it.
Telling in some countries the price of a cup of tea is the same a the price of a cop of coffee.

A couple of the things (pawning your stuff, texting whilst driving) are pretty common in Barangland as well.Kachang wrote:Switching on the light of your car or motorbike at night, or at least between sunset and full darkness.

I haven't seen a pawn shop in the UK for ages - although there are loads of payday loan companies which I'm sure have almost put the pawnshops out of business.
