Following rules
I went to bank today to withdraw cash. Put cash in my man-bag (brought along specifically for this purpose) and on way back to work I stopped at the supermarket. On entering the shop i was challenged by a staff member to leave my bag at an unmanned bag drop counter, now considering i had a considerable amount of money in the bag I wasn't willing to let it out of my sight.
The manager was there and she said that I must leave my bag - I said i didn't want to as i had something valuable inside but it was ok if they weren't flexible then i'd just go shop elsewhere. She said that she had to follow the rules, but then a cashier stepped forward and said that she knew me and as they weren't so busy so she would walk around the shop with me. I could see that the manager wasn't happy but she agreed.
So, I walked around the shop and picked up a couple of things with a chirpy little Khmer girl on my shoulder, then i went to pay. As i reached the checkout, the manager called the girl across and gave her a severe bollocking for not respecting her and not following the rules. I could hear all this and whilst i didn't get involved i found it pretty depressing.
The cashier thought outside the box to find a solution, giving good customer service. The manager just wanted to follow rules and was willing to lose sales due to inflexibility.
She felt it was more important to exert her power rather than give good customer service. Sadly an all too typical attitude.

Maybe the manager thinks "check your bags or shop somewhere else" is a perfectly reasonable rule and doesn't want her cashiers' time wasted by acting as the personal escorts for all the shoppers who refuse to check their bags.

Sounds like you were at Thai Hout. If ever I pop by with a rucksack they try it on i either walk past them ignoring them or I tell them no thanks I'm picking up just a couple of items and I'm not here to steal unless they think I am a thief in which case I'll leave and shop elsewhere. Always does the trick. Seems you were unlucky to get the jobsworth manager.

Yeah, the policy should be that people have to leave their bags unless they say that they're not there to steal.tombraider wrote:Sounds like you were at Thai Hout. What a stupid rule. Never experience this anywhere in Cambodia. Was this at a supermarket? What could you possibly fit in your man purse, a box of tampon. Since they are so worried about shop lifting do it like other Asian countries where they could simply have a guard stand or sit! at the exit/entrance and request customers to inspect their bag when leaving.

Haha. I was wondering what angle you would latch onto to be a pain.gavinmac wrote:Maybe the manager thinks "check your bags or shop somewhere else" is a perfectly reasonable rule and doesn't want her cashiers' time wasted by acting as the personal escorts for all the shoppers who refuse to check their bags.
Have you ever just said ‘Cool story bro, tell me another’?
If you ever shop in Khmer supermarkets you’d know that wasting staff time shouldn’t really be a issue. They have approximately twice as many staff as they need with most of them just standing at the end of aisles waiting to tidy the stock after a customer buys something.

I could probably have fit a dozen miniature bottles of booze in there. The big Hennessy bottle was safe.the chicken wrote:What a stupid rule. Never experience this anywhere in Cambodia. Anyhow the general point was,
The ‘customer is king’ maxim certainly doesn’t apply in many places here.
Even regular customers are seen as somewhat of a nuisance and is not an issue if they leave to shop elsewhere.
Today the one staff member who went above and beyond to give good customer service got a bollocking for her efforts.

You're only a nuisance if you expect special treatment and refuse to check your bag like everyone else.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote: The ‘customer is king’ maxim certainly doesn’t apply in many places here.

Not quite my point. My point being that all the hassle they try to go through to put a bag in there (for whatever reason) if all you're doing is grabbing a couple of items is an unnecessary nuisance and quite the inverse of the experience at any other supermarket or shop in Cambodia, who never ask for this. It's precisely the thing one would expect you to complain about as being ridiculous had it happened to yougavinmac wrote:Yeah, the policy should be that people have to leave their bags unless they say that they're not there to steal.tombraider wrote:Sounds like you were at Thai Hout. Yes check in your purse and if your shit gone missing, file a police report and claim a compensation from gavinmac.gavinmac wrote:You're only a nuisance if you expect special treatment and refuse to check your bag like everyone else.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote: The ‘customer is king’ maxim certainly doesn’t apply in many places here.
