Worse thing about Cambodia
Where is the evidence that suggests Cambodia's streets have more garbage than neighboring countries? I have eaten horrible street food in Bangkok, but mostly acceptable for consumption, especially considering the price paid. It's not much different from here in my opinion.
Norway is pristine, full of liberated and highly educated genuine blondes, and very expensive. Enjoy.

As an opinion post I cant give a cited dissertation with evidence but I think the good ole personal sniff test works here.
Over my years of living and travel throughout Cambodia and its neighbors its my opinion that Phnom Penh has an overall worse garbage on the streets, litter problem than Bangkok/HCMC -Thailand/Vietnam.
As for street food, yes one can find shit street food there, but again in my experience the street food in both Vietnam and Thailand is an overall much better experience than in Cambodia for most expats and tourists. Most/many people I know with the same experience would agree. Maybe that's presumptuous but I cant recall many people saying its the other way around or even equals. As a side note, I have always thought western food in Cambodia was overall on average better than in much of Asia.
Norway is out then - never preferred Blondes. Unfortunately I cant quantify for you why that is.
If we ran a poll here - Which place has a worse garbage problem? I believe Cambodia would win hands down. I also think ranking these three countries on their street food scene that PP/Cambodia would be last on that list too. Honestly that's great if you believe its better or on par with the next doors on these two points. I really wish I did too to be honest but for me its not.

Living in Toul Kork which is quite pristine in many places versus say BKK, TTP, etc - it can still have streets full of garbage (see around st.345, 347 factory, etc). Nip on to 598 and suddenly there is a switch as you get further out.
Likewise I know several street food vendors that are really good in the area, but equally there are many hawking their wares on the street that have clearly turned or are just bland or even nasty.
So at the top end I'd happily say - this particular street I live on is cleaner than an average street in Bangkok, and this food is also better than an average in Ho Chi Minh, BUT, and it is a big BUT (and I cannot lie), on average, PP for sure is way down the list versus neighbours; it just has some hidden gems where you'd least expect them.
Here it is very easy to go from extreme luxury & cleanliness to filth just by turning a corner. It is very sporadic. I never get that in Bangkok or HCMC - I kinda know that I'm heading to somewhere that's a bit more grim & along the way it steadily deteriorates in cleanliness & food quality. That's my opinion anyway.

The worse thing today is that I have noticed that the thumbs up feature on K440 posts is left handed.
Why are we pandering towards this special needs minority?
It's political correctness gone mad.

Spigzy do you get the sense that the quality of street food is deteriorating? Or is it just me?
Previously there were loads of papaya salad, crispy noodle salad, rice porridge, stir fried noodles, fresh spring rolls etc etc etc
Of course these are still there, but IMO not as plentiful as before. Now I am seeing loads more deep fried crap, chicken, prahut, cakes, street pizza and other processed garbage.
When I get a hunger craving at nighttime I now find it a bit more difficult to find something I'm happy to eat.

Don't mention the Giant Panda in the room.
With 30+ years of living in these parts I think you are spot on.kansaicanuck wrote: ↑Wed Nov 17, 2021 9:10 amAs an opinion post I cant give a cited dissertation with evidence but I think the good ole personal sniff test works here.

The worst thing about Cambodia is expats who divert threads to complain that expats don’t understand the difference between worse and worst.
Funny after over 30 years here I guess you start to compare Thailand and Cambodia both countries are destroyed as well as the rest of Southeast Asia. The stench of Bangkok sewers beats everything here. It's true that it's full of trash, plastic trash everywhere, no matter where you probably go in the Asean. I bet Mexico City is also full of garbage, New Delhi the list goes on. But in Norway you can of course claim that it's everyone's fault except your own.

Now you mention it yes. I never really went for much of that stuff, but fresh fruit (mango, asian plums, etc) seem to have diminished streetwise arouhd my way, but one of the best sellers from the 'good old days' opened up a shop that I use all the time now anyway. I don't see the grilled potato guy around much either, that was another fave of mine anyway; and the movement from fresh 'organic' chicken to bloated CP-esque chicken stalls is also a big disappointment. I used to be the other way around, complaining about the lack of meat on those street skewer wings, but the flavour took me back to my childhood when chicken tasted like chicken.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote: ↑Wed Nov 17, 2021 2:23 pm@Spigzy do you get the sense that the quality of street food is deteriorating? I haven't seen anyone selling those little potato and coconut grilled things for ages. They always sold them with the grilled bananas on a stick.
They were great & cheap sustenance after exercise.

"bloated CP-esque chicken stalls".
The average Cambodian street stall never reached the quality in Thailand, but the best few were/are excellent. I think Smelly fart is correct about the average quality dropping recently. Partly, I'd guess it is the pandemic reducing the amount of loose cash in the system: there isn't enough to go around and even in richer areas people were not buying. But Sprigzy correct too, processed food franchise style stalls seem ascendant. CP is a big player, but there are many. A niece asked me about fronting $ for an all inclusive street stall dim sum license! Tasty and clean, if a bit too sweet, but what is it made of??
It is hard to image fake food fully taking over Thai stalls - and I'd cry if it did, but it would be just as sad if the mere pretty fair food normally found here moved ever closer to what passes for cheap restaurant food in the Philippines.

Guedt9999, good that you mention the Philippines.
Cambodia street food isn't the best in the area but it's still gourmet food compared to the Philippines crap.
