Foreigner Salaries
I saw this post on FB this morning and I am fascinated/intrigued by it no end.
This foreigner is advertising for casual daily employment at $12.50 per day.
If he works all day, every day in a month he will take home $375. That's just about enough for his annual WP and visa. I thought it was spoof until I saw people commenting saying how great he was (it still might be a spoof)
A few years ago I was quoted (for local labour) 50,000 riel for 'may jeing' (experienced worker) and 30,000 for 'kon jeing' (a kid labourer).
And these numbers are out of date - I'm sure the cost hasn't gone down. Are there really foreigners out there who are working for daily rates that locals would turn their noses up at?
I can't get my head around how he is living on this income...he, unlike Khmer folk, most likely won't have a family to live with rent free and likely won't have a rice field, vegetable garden and livestock to live off.
How can a foreigner be here, pay rent, eat & drink, have transport, cover medical costs & be legal???
I can only imagine the kind of miserable life it entails. Fair play for actually being willing to work, but...
Unless of course he has a very significant, passive income from his bitcoin portfolio...

Well, it's near minimum hourly wage in the west, but then again isn't his hard graft quite honourable compared to some lazy ass, cliquey, it's who you know NGO's?

I reckon private sector and public sector in Cambodia is much more 'who you know' jobs than NGOs. It's all about the string.spitthedog wrote: ↑Sat Jan 08, 2022 6:07 pmWell, it's near minimum hourly wage in the west, but then again isn't his hard graft quite honourable compared to some lazy ass, cliquey, it's who you know NGO's?
(It's a bit predictable though that a thread about salaries, the first response is a dig at NGOs.)
In my experience NGOs have pursued counter-cultural meritocracy appointments. Do you know different?
Yes, fair play for being willing to work, I'm not criticizing that. Its more like, how on earth can he live?

Well, to be honest, I'm more interested to know, if YOU are working, to form an opinion on your opinion of this person?ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote: ↑Sat Jan 08, 2022 6:25 pmI reckon private sector and public sector in Cambodia is much more 'who you know' jobs than NGOs. If one were to assume the Strimmer dude is real in the first place, of course.

Did the sentence in bold make sense in your head? I've read it 3 times and I still don't really know how to answer the question.spitthedog wrote: ↑Sat Jan 08, 2022 6:42 pmWell, to be honest, I'm more interested to know, if YOU are working, to form an opinion on your opinion of this person?ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote: ↑Sat Jan 08, 2022 6:25 pmI reckon private sector and public sector in Cambodia is much more 'who you know' jobs than NGOs. Yes, I work. I work in excess of full-time hours. Does that answer the question?
I wondered if the guy's friends were taking the piss and used his phone to post while he was at the bog.
This reminds me of the piss stained pie making reverse-UNO-baseball-bat beaten dog walker Brit that was deported a few years ago.
I think these guys get by mostly on sympathy from friends and whoever they can momentarily cling on to. Jacks of all trades, bottom feeding scum, the list is long.
You’d be surprised by how many survive by eating leftover rice alone. Dogs.

Forrest Gump was successful and still mowed the public football stadium for free

Forest Gump? It's a somewhat gray area...
Don't tell v12 though, he'll have him arrested and deported.

Nope, but he got the Medal of Honour, so he should be all good if anyone asks him to get one ..

Should keep him busy for a few days,
US military pensions are about that anyway so they must get a small amount more on top of their pension.Spigzy wrote: ↑Sat Jan 08, 2022 9:06 pmNope, but he got the Medal of Honour, so he should be all good if anyone asks him to get one ..

My guess is this weed wacker guy is just on his last $ and is desperately trying anything but he’ll be gone soon.

Well who knows why he does that but
maybe he is and old guy that has a low pension from some EU country, like 1000$ a month and does this to keep busy, do some exercise and make friends.
Perhaps he upsales by offering saplings, sell fertilizer, pesticide, mulch and flowers (etc...) for the garden?
Seems like an healthier hobby than running a girl bar at a net loss (which seems like a favorite hobby of western retirees).
Or maybe he is just an ice head that managed to get his hands on a weed Wacker

Or maybe he doesn't do the cutting himself. Like a pimp advertising $5 blowjobs. That would be my first thought.jackrossi wrote: ↑Mon Jan 10, 2022 6:38 pm
