I have absolutely zero interest in western fast food chinese food, I meant Chinese food by Chinese from China for Chinese. I often am able to translate menus with camera or ask for dishes in translate, that or use review photos and point. Thanks very much for the advice on the area with properly good resturaunts I hope to check it out soon.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote: ↑Tue May 10, 2022 4:13 pmIt depends on your definition of ‘Chinese food’
If you are looking for British type Chinese takeaway food. Then no.
But there are many authentic Chinese restaurants around, but many are not foreigner (non-Chinese) friendly. Not that they are hostile, it’s just menus are not so much in English…
Around Ratana Plaza there are quite a few proper Chinese restaurants. Then there are various Chinese noodle and dumpling dotted around the place, they can be good.
Oh won't you take me to, a China town.
Cheers

When I was in my twenties, the older brother of my mate and one of his mates went to China for a holiday. When they came back they were pretty dissatisfied because ‘the food was crap, they don’t have proper Chinese food over there’CSS wrote: ↑Tue May 10, 2022 8:57 pmI have absolutely zero interest in western fast food chinese food, I meant Chinese food by Chinese from China for Chinese. Both Singapore and Hong Kong have dishes which are almost identical to the ones you find in the UK. Now I'm thinking about, in Vietnam as well restaurant, I'm assuming they are catering for the local taste buds.
I think the British Chinese is the closest I've ever come to proper Chinese outside China and Asia.

If I could find British/American Chinese food, I'd be in there like a shot. I have zero interest in the 'authentic dishes'/slop I see around town. Many places will bar you from entry, not coz they can't print the menu using the world's most popular language but because they are indeed racist. However, maybe not a bad thing if you've ever had the misfortune of witnessing them at the dining table.

To be fair, I have had some really great meals in authentic Chinese restaurants here. But, I’ve been with a friend who speaks Chinese and he orders everything.Guest5 wrote: ↑Wed May 11, 2022 6:23 amIf I could find British/American Chinese food, I'd be in there like a shot. Near to my previous house there was a Chinese restaurant who had Khmer staff and I was able to chat to them in Khmer and order pretty good food.
I’m not sure racist is the right word, but many Chinese restaurants sure are intolerant, they just can’t be bothered with customers they can’t communicate easily with.

I’ve never been in HK but have eaten Chinese food in Singapore quite a few times and have never had anything like a UK takeaway dish… maybe I’ve just been lucky though.
‘An idiot abroad’ has a funny episode about Chinese food.
Stick to the pickled onion monster munch.

Which of the 197 regional Chinese cuisines do you refer to as 'authentic' Chinese food? British? Bland and too much MSG.
Only place I know of is Fat Cow in Kampot, British guy Chinese wife.Guest5 wrote: ↑Wed May 11, 2022 6:23 amIf I could find British/American Chinese food, I'd be in there like a shot. With regards to barring long noses is that hearsay or actual personal experience? I ask because I’ve eaten in a few Chinese-Chinese places in SHV and PP with no issues. It helps if you’re dressed appropriately and someone speaks Chinese though.
pew, pew, pew, pew!
What surprised me about the high end Chinese restaurants around Ratana, is that much of the food looks and tastes exactly the same as a Chinese restaurant I used to frequent in the UK. All apart from that brown jelly served as a sweet.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote: ↑Tue May 10, 2022 4:13 pmIt depends on your definition of ‘Chinese food’

It's just hearsay. I have eaten in multiple Chinese places in in SHV and PP too, and never had any problems. Like you said, helps if you can speak Chinese. Or Khmer as many places the waitress staff is local. But I have got food on my table with help of Google Translate and just showing the dish I want from the menu. On my last trip to SHV few Chinese places even had english on their menu But the translations didn't make much senseYaTingPom wrote: ↑Wed May 11, 2022 4:02 pmOnly place I know of is Fat Cow in Kampot, British guy Chinese wife.Guest5 wrote: ↑Wed May 11, 2022 6:23 amIf I could find British/American Chinese food, I'd be in there like a shot. There are some places around Phnom Penh like Sam Too and those handmade noodle/ dumpling shops I used to go to a lot. I like that UK style sweet and sour pork/ chicken too but none I have found has been that good.
As far as I can see most of the higher-end restaurants around the city frequented by the better off have a Chinese rather than Khmer cuisine. Hardly surprising when you remember the city's roots.

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Years ago went into a Chinese- Chinese place in SHV and the little angry short owner came running out “No. no western. No”. My FIL was with me and kicked off (in Chinese) and the guy ended up giving us a great table after apologising profusely, in English, and the staff were fantastic. We had a lot of dishes we never paid for plus some godawful Chinese liquor. Went back twice…then we all got Chinesed.rogerrabbit wrote: ↑Wed May 11, 2022 8:41 pmIt's just hearsay. Anyway, turns out they’d had two groups of barang who started fighting each other about a week previously.
Superb food. They did have some dishes I’ve tried that were English-Chinese but I’m guessing they’ve not adopted them like the Indians have some English curries.

I definitely wouldn’t class any of those as high end…Yes, can get decent food but they are very far from high end.

I think the point he was making is that the taste is similar. And it's not just him who think so a number of people have commented that food from the Chinese food in the UK is similar to what you find in Southeast Asia.
In both high end and greasy spoon type restaurants.
