I'm working on my collection of "uncirculated" or "nearly uncirculated" Cambodian banknotes since independence. I'm short some of the larger notes like the 30,000 riel Paris Peace Agreement note.
If I go to a bank with 30,000 riel and a picture of the note I want, will they exchange my 30,000 riel with one of these notes or am I just going to confuse everyone and make a big scene?
(I'm not in-country now thanks to draconian travel restrictions where I live, but I'm asking in preparation for my upcoming visit to PP. I'm also not sure if my Khmer is good enough to explain that I'm a banknote collector, but I'll give it a go.)
Asking for a specific banknote at a bank?
You will most likely just cause confusion, but if you don't try then you'll never know.
I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.
You might do better at one of the Ly Hour or other money exchangers around Olympic Market with that approach than a bank. I never saw a 30,000 Riel note in all my time here, and that has included handling a heck of a lot of Khmer notes (and smell ..).
For the specials, you might do better to approach the NBC who may have some in reserve for collectors, or know where to get one, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Store a photo of (a part of) your collection on your phone. Point at the gap and the note you want. Maybe some of the staff will understand it. I would start with moneychangers too.
Thanks all. There are 4 notes I'm looking for in the 10k to 20k range. Something tells me I'm gonna spend a lot of time trying to get these, but I'll try the suggestions you all mentioned. In the end I can get them from ebay but for x2 or x3 face value.
"...Khmer is good enough to explain that I'm a banknote collector..."
I used to do the serial numbers, and still look out of habit, but the good ones are held and the popularity seems to have waned.
Everyone's a banknote collector, some better at it than others.

My friend a old us banker always goes to the National Bank of Cambodia and gets crisp off the printer new banknotes. The recent new one he got was the 15000 riel note. They don't exchange money there but the trick is to get fairly clean or better crisp riel from your bank first and than ask for the new 30000 Notes. They must have them. And...........................you'll be the only foreigner they have seen for many years. They cater to banks mostly.
Hey the icon you use in your post...the old man with the cigar. Just curious if you know the background to that guy? (Maybe you do and that's why you picked it.) But anyway, he lived in Havana, Cuba in the early 2000's and made the cover of Lonely Planet Cuba 2007. When I was in Havana in 2007 (without a Lonely Planet book) I found him sitting on a chair with the Lonely Planet getting people to take photos with him for a few pesos.
Here's another pic of him I found online:

Anyway, have a good day.
I think that's my plan.Guest wrote: ↑Mon Apr 11, 2022 8:56 pmMy friend a old us banker always goes to the National Bank of Cambodia and gets crisp off the printer new banknotes. Per google...
Does National Bank of Cambodia provide currency to public?
Yes. The NBC can exchange any old riel notes or coins, which it has issued, upon demand without any fees or charges.

Just saw the NBC launched a commemorative KHR 15,000 note, add that to your list!

A photographer friend took that photo In Havana in the early 2000's. The original framed copy used to hang in Garage bar, disappeared with the 3rd owner.barangPP wrote: ↑Tue Apr 12, 2022 6:30 amHey the icon you use in your post...the old man with the cigar.
