Are Khmers nicer than the people where you are from?
Cooktown is now full of iceheads?? Cooktown was full of bearded mountain men and cool as fuck. They'd probably have given you a beating for driving a MX5 or SLK even then though. Don't think they'd have stolen it.
As per my prior comment,
I have been fucked over by some of my Khmer family members,
But also shown a lot of love and acceptance by others family members.
However, as to the general population of Khmer's and their interaction with me.
No problem at all, I show them respect and kindness and they show me the same back.
My children can play in the street with other children.
My wife can strike up a conversation with a neighbor or a stranger without a problem.
I can have a stuttered conversation with my neighbor where we just give up because neither of us understands what we are saying, but we still smile at each other and laugh.
I find my interaction with Khmer people in and about where we live to be much more relaxed than it is back in Oz.
Of course, when in a commercial environment - the seller is going for blood and the best price - and I can not find a problem with that.
Sometimes people confuse the commercial aspect of living in Cambodia with the People of Cambodia.
They are two different creatures.

I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

I'd say London is considerably more stabby than the Kingdom of Wonder to be honest.
Mostly, the only thing you have to worry about in Cambodia, is getting drunk and walking down some dark street after midnight.
But even then, you are unlikely to get hurt, whilst getting robbed at knife point.
That is "NICE".

That is ok, I am just adding my personal experiences to the thread. The first time I witnessed this in 2012, it was a rather large shock to me as well, since the only gang like mentality I’d experienced at weddings prior to this was the obligatory skulling of ice (frozen water) laden beers at extremely short intervals and the constant invitations to roam with the bu’s, bongs and om’s. . I also would like to agree with the general notion that khmers are nicer than most people of other citizenships, however when mentioning stabby little shitstains from any country, I’m afraid cambodia has their fair share of them and they aren’t much different from the chavs/eshays/roadmen/gopniks etc that plague our home nations.scoffer wrote: ↑Sun Apr 24, 2022 8:23 pmI cannot say I've experienced or even heard of examples of what you said above.Weddingcrashers wrote: ↑Sun Apr 24, 2022 4:58 pm
I’ve been to at least 3 weddings where gangs of local stieyw (excuse pronunciation) have done exactly that. Roamed around and mid celebration arrived with cleavers, swords and poles. Funnily enough at one of these wedding at my inlaws place, they were chased off with bigger cleavers, swords and poles. The other two, we were hearded into a lockable room until the freshy boys had ran through the place.
Anyway, being ushered into a locked room with a couple of cases of beer and a bottle of Hennessy while whatever village dispute is being played out maybe only further attests to the fact that khmers are nicer than people where I’m from, as they could easily have left us out to fend for ourselves on those 2 occasions.
Also just to clarify, the first instance of the locked room with beer and henny and an actual lockable door (near the bridge on national Rd 61 going over the tonle sap) was far more civilised than the second instance (kampong spue) where we only had black panthers and rice wine and a metal pole propping the door closed. Either way, both times refreshments were at hand.

If people sleeping on the streets and asking you for 2 bucks scares you, then it may be possible that you're just an utter pussy. Look inward.Dan Murphy wrote: ↑Thu Apr 28, 2022 4:06 pmThere is shit loads of petty crime, car thefts, robberies. In the city panhandlers, beggars and bums are everywhere. It’s not safe on the streets.

Prison life is a culture where the marginalised and disenfranchised can seek refuge and "prestige" in a world that has essentially cast them out. You can beat the dead horse all you like, but our reliance on gaols to regulate society's problems has been an excersice of futility. Keeping young people out of that system is forward thinking (granted, results may take years/decades to manifest). If you want to stop people from being better criminals then, beside from the serious nutters, stop sending them to criminal university.bipolar bear wrote: ↑Mon Apr 25, 2022 11:12 pmFFS, I don't know if it has happened already or will happen but Scotland seemed to seriously be looking to all but outlaw jailing under-25s.Guest wrote: ↑Mon Apr 25, 2022 7:31 pmGd luck to them all strutting about prison thinking they are the shit.
I've noticed people hustle and work a lot less in Cambodia than Vietnam, Thailand, or Malaysia but things are simultaneously very concerned about money. It seems very contrary and I don't understand. Things close quite early, have less working hours, very little 24/7 business, many inefficiencies.
Cheers
