I’ve been to at least 3 weddings where gangs of local stieyw (excuse pronunciation) have done exactly that. Roamed around and mid celebration arrived with cleavers, swords and poles. Funnily enough at one of these wedding at my inlaws place, they were chased off with bigger cleavers, swords and poles. The other two, we were hearded into a lockable room until the freshy boys had ran through the place.Lucky Lucan wrote: ↑Sun Apr 24, 2022 4:20 pmLooking at it a different way there are far more nasty and aggressive people where I'm from. You don't get gangs of tracksuited chavs/skangers roaming around harassing the public here.
Are Khmers nicer than the people where you are from?
Most Khmer are indeed nicer but it all depends mostly on your attitude aswell.
I cannot say I've experienced or even heard of examples of what you said above.Weddingcrashers wrote: ↑Sun Apr 24, 2022 4:58 pm

I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

Yup, sounds absolute bs. I've been here years.scoffer wrote: ↑Sun Apr 24, 2022 8:23 pmI cannot say I've experienced or even heard of examples of what you said above.Weddingcrashers wrote: ↑Sun Apr 24, 2022 4:58 pm

If by nice you mean civil, yes, Khmers are generally a civil bunch. I was once asked where I was from by a Khmer hotelier and he commented how polite I was. He quickly added that Khmers are also very polite people.

Khmer loves $$$$$. All about their talk is money.
To me, the question isn't as straightforward as it might seem. Since I've been in Cambodia, my home country, the UK, has changed out of all recognition - for the worse. At the same time, the quality of life for Cambodians has vastly improved. Less poverty and ignorance has resulted in far less crime and dishonesty in my experience. What hasn't changed is the admirable degree of respect, civility and friendliness I see in Khmers on a daily basis.
Cambodia is only your home country if you were born here. You can’t just adopt a home country and then slate your actual home country!guest9 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 25, 2022 9:02 amTo me, the question isn't as straightforward as it might seem. I agree with your thoughts though.
pew, pew, pew, pew!
YTP - sorry, ambiguous punctuation. I meant my home country is the UK.
What happened to the glass half full guy? Been burned by someone here?

1. Real smiles from strangers
2. Random acts of honesty from very poor people
3. The answer is always "yes no problem"
4. Money can make almost anything go away
5. Always something to see
6.The Culture ( I am Australian, we have none)
7.Khmers don't expect anything from the Government.
8. The food
9.Lawyers don't run the country
10. Affordable
These are not in order and are just off the top of my head. The more I think about it I could just keep going and going..............I'll leave the rest for others.

For locals wanting money, it can seem that way depending on your lifestyle. If you tend to walk a bit in certain areas you will get constant tuk tuks, if you sit at street level on riverside, go to hostess bars, sit on shitsville beaches, walk in markets, those activities may result in more people looking to part you from your money. If you know when & where to expect it, it doesn't feel like much of a bother.
When dealing with wife/husband/partner, in-laws, or friends? That shouldn't be the case unless you've surrounded yourself with the wrong people.

Hadn’t been in England for over 2 years. On the train from the airport some random chav commented on me calling me the C word. Had not even glanced at the c***.
However for my 2 week stay there everyone else was polite.
Is like that on most places, when they are bad they are very bad. For some unknown reason a lot of men pride themselves on being aggressive. Gd luck to them all strutting about prison thinking they are the shit.

England is an utter shithole now. Anyone with any brains is either gone, planning to be gone or sadly wishing they were in a position to either plan to go or were already gone.Guest wrote: ↑Mon Apr 25, 2022 7:31 pmTell me about it.

And as for the strutting around prison? That only happens to first time offenders who've gone straight in at GBH, rape or murder. Otherwise, maybe eventually, when they have racked up so many offences or escalated the severity of their offences that even the wettest member of the judiciary eventually realises they can't go for a non-custodial, they might actually get banged up.
You're more likely to get banged up for juicing HMRC out of £10k VAT than for banging out some stranger in an unprovoked street attack.
FFS, I don't know if it has happened already or will happen but Scotland seemed to seriously be looking to all but outlaw jailing under-25s.

I think it's an environment where knowledge and experience are more attractive values than property and cash. It still feels like many locals consider Westerners mature enough to overcharge 2-3 times for the same services Chinese get at a discount. It seems that many people want personal revenge for centuries of colonization. So for a crap room in TTP you pay double the price, and for power 1000 riel pr kw etc. I was also abused by a few tuk-tuks, who seem to hate how pass-app charges everyone the same price now.
And that's why I'm probably not alone in thinking that finding a trustworthy local partner to help you out with your business is key to long-term survival here.
