Is it hard for Cambodians to get a job?
An old friend is explaining to me that she has no job. How hard is it for a 40 year old woman to get a job in Phnom Penh. No qualifications, previously made her money through a small hair salon she had which went bust in recent years.
Does she have a chance of finding an income she can survive on? No kids or dependants.

It’s not hard, there are jobs out there. It doesn’t take much gumption to find one.
There are signs up all over the city of businesses looking for employees, often no experience needed, if she can dress appropriately and stand up straight then she has a chance,
Perhaps they not jobs she would want to do, perhaps she sees herself above some of them or isn’t willing to accept the low salary.
Perhaps times aren’t tough enough for her yet to consider lowering herself to more menial tasks.

I don’t think she would mind what job she does and I doubt she sees herself as above being a cleaner for example. Confidence could be a problem, also you say if she dresses appropriately. You mean to be wearing nice clothes? I doubt she goes shopping that much. Maybe she isn’t dressing nice these days.
Are there agencies out there that can sort work? I think at this point any income is good. What is minimum wage these days?

Have a digital CV ready. Most job advertisers don't want to be contacted directly. You need to send the CV through Bong Thom. Read the ads carefully and they'll tell you what they want, hopefully.
And YES, I believe that it is very difficult for a Cambodian woman in her 40's to find a job here. It took my wife 8 months. She was told at least 50 times that she was too old immediately when they saw her. The few good interviews she was asked to go in for were companies run by foreigners. Could be coincidental. Maybe.

I don’t think a 40 year old, unqualified ex-salon worker should be seeking jobs thru bong Thom.chkwoot wrote: ↑Tue Nov 29, 2022 7:23 amBongthom.com

I suspect that those jobs are way out outside her prospects.

She should know what appropriate clothing should be for the job being applied for.Guest wrote: ↑Mon Nov 28, 2022 10:03 pmI don’t think she would mind what job she does and I doubt she sees herself as above being a cleaner for example. You don’t need to be suited and booted for a cleaning job, just maybe not wearing pajamas or looking like a street walker.
For an office job then dress smart-ish. She doesn’t need be be catwalk style.
There is only a min wage for the garment industry - something like 200, but there should be overtime and social security benefits on top of that.
Other industries don’t have a minimum wage.
As with everything here there probably are agents, I don’t know if any - but I don’t think it’s necessary.
Tell her to drive around and look for staff wanted notices and call that number. Ask her friends to take photos of any signs they see and pass them on. Hotels are getting busier and some are recruiting again.
It’s not that difficult, but i guess it might be more difficult that sending a message to you, appealing to your soft heart and hoping you send her some funds. But maybe I’m too cynical

Previously I would probably have agreed with you, but over 8 months of helping my wife, I found many job advertisers post multiple jobs at all levels. It just took a lot of time for her to find the right one.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote: ↑Tue Nov 29, 2022 8:17 amI don’t think a 40 year old, unqualified ex-salon worker should be seeking jobs thru bong Thom.chkwoot wrote: ↑Tue Nov 29, 2022 7:23 amBongthom.com

Your experience is more recent than mine then. I’d still imagine though that for a $250 a month job, then driving around looking for signs would be more productive than watching Bong Thom.
There is an irritating (to me) feature that locals have when they are looking for work. This is a generalisation and obvs doesn’t apply to everyone.
There is a frequent misconception that employers should look for staff rather than employees look for a job. We advertise on Facebook, with instructions to email a CV. And about 40% of comments on the post are just telephone numbers. They expect us to call them rather than them following the instructions and sending a CV.
The gumption to get off your ass, get out there and look for a job is not that common. When locals tell me that they don’t have and can’t find a job, I always ask them what have they done to look. The response is often disappointing.

She could try a short haired English dictionary if times are really tough; occasionally they come with the hair* & don't drink $0.50 beer every single day.

3 barang households at $100 a month
What's the maths on that ?
No skills required. Just a can do attitude.

From my experience,
I'd say a lack of confidence in their ability to learn and preform a role holds them back from chasing down a job.
Add to that if the applicant is 40+ years old, then they most likely have not had a great education and their English is limited or non existent.
So yes, finding a job for a 40 year old woman would be difficult in PP.

I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

Your first point might be correct.scoffer wrote: ↑Wed Nov 30, 2022 12:56 pmFrom my experience,

Your second is not. There are plenty of jobs available for low education, non English speakers. Only a small proportion of jobs require Khmer people to serve or engage with foreigners. PP is much bigger than the bars and restaurants of the riverside.
It really isn’t difficult to find a job if you have the right attitude. Cleaning in homes, schools, in hotels, in malls, security, factory worker (not just garment factory) are all roles which all seem to be continually looking for staff. They will be low paid - but that’s unfortunately what a low educated person can expect.
Interestingly, yesterday in two different places I was told that they find it difficult to find staff. These would both be entry level positions. Perhaps there is an opportunity for an app to link employers to unskilled workers… JobPanda, Work24?
correct, there is actually a spin off dedicated to supporting women into work , Bong Srey បងស្រី - ការងារក្នុងប្រទេសកម្ពុជាshe would be better off checking https://bongsrey.com/ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote: ↑Tue Nov 29, 2022 8:17 amI don’t think a 40 year old, unqualified ex-salon worker should be seeking jobs thru bong Thom.chkwoot wrote: ↑Tue Nov 29, 2022 7:23 amBongthom.com
