Kampot: A Different Kind Of Town
This pretty town seems to have something of a dark side to its character though... There is a higher percentage of white western faces here than anywhere else we’ve been on this trip......Unfortunately those expats seem to be mostly ageing men who have forgotten a) how to keep their weight down, b) how to have a haircut and c) how to make themselves look presentable. From mid afternoon onwards groups of them slouch around the bars putting yet more beer into their oversize bellies and puffing on an endless chain of cigarettes.
As darkness falls, scantily clad young local girls sit provocatively outside some of the seedier looking bars and the thought of what might happen when those fat old expats go to these girlie bars is a singularly unpleasant one.
Away from its sleazy centre, Kampot’s crowning glory is its riverside with a lovely promenade on one side and a whole fleet of floating restaurants on the other.
Pat is hilariously and outrageously camp, skips around like a butterfly on caffeine, and within the first few minutes has told Michaela she has a beautiful smile and has called me “handsome” and “a cheeky monkey”.

I revisited Kampot a couple of weeks ago after a break of five years and was saddened to see the overbuilding and ugly development taking place. I'm no fan of hostess bars either.
I noticed more obesity in the Western tourists than in the pirate gangs of Pattaya Refugees who were virtually all bald and unshaven: old men in shorts with their fags and cans. One especially prognathous Englishman looked like the kind of reconstruction of a Neanderthal you find in natural history museums.
Of indeterminate old age, I can't grudge them their few last days of sunshine in their twilight years. After all, I am one of them.
There's a lot of sex tourism in Kampot but the vast majority involves young western backpackers who enjoy consensual (perhaps occasionally non-consensual) sex with each other. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
The only comments I heard from other tourists (female) about inappropriate dress were in reference to the 'People of Walmart' barang ladies who were showing far too much skin. A solid case for the burqa if there ever was one.
For #MeToo. Particularly when I think about how they will be ripped off by ladydrink scams and inflated beer prices. I was unfortunate enough to see some of the fat older hostesses enter their bars in the daylight hours and they were enough to put me off my sundowner. The skinny meth freaks among them - all with dyed blonde hair - looked like wizened bonobos. This pretty town seems to have something of a dark side to its character though. Kampot is very obviously a place where expats settle, joined by a steady flow of travellers like us passing through for a few days. There is a higher percentage of white western faces here than anywhere else we’ve been on this trip, and virtually all of the restaurants advertise an “international menu”. Unfortunately those expats seem to be mostly ageing men who have forgotten a) how to keep their weight down, b) how to have a haircut and c) how to make themselves look presentable. From mid afternoon onwards groups of them slouch around the bars putting yet more beer into their oversize bellies and puffing on an endless chain of cigarettes.

They'd be a match for the gruesome Messalinas in the bars from what I saw. I never understood what the term back-boob meant until entering the twilight zone of Kampotty

I don't believe that is considered "sex tourism", as there is no money exchanged. It's just young people being promiscuous.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

I’m neither old nor fat, and my hair is amazing. But I still say, fuck the pair of them for acting like old people have some sort of responsibility to make themselves look thin and beautiful so that the tourists don’t have their holidays ruined from having to look at them.
When I grow old I fully intend to not give a fuck how pretty I am.

I'm aware of how the pc-woke brigade use the term: I'm doing my small bit to subvert it. I believe the fear of miscegenation underpins much of their values, that holiday sex is ok as long as you don't go native. It's a common colonialist trope.
That said, after seeing some of the hot western backpackers around town I'm surprised anyone could look twice at the whorestess bar monsters.

No longer lean as the 10 kilos I put on during Spanish lockdowns is stubbornly not shifting plus injuries and an aging skeleton don't help, but still a mean cycling machine with a taste for beer and good food.
