You make a good point. Scoffer, you need to tone it down a little - dressing way too flash!nerdlinger wrote: ↑Sat Jun 03, 2023 10:07 pmThere’s so many stories of this knocking about that it has made me a lot more wary of expats than I have been in other countries. It’s not really come up for me though, as I generally try to avoid looking too flash.
Have you helped another expat? Poll.

I have helped expats several times and found that helping expats is not much different than loaning money to Cambodians. When you ask them to repay you, they will stop being a friend and in many cases create a reason to break a friendship with you as a means of avoiding repayment. There are a few good people who are reliable and trustworthy but you need to limit the level of assistance to an amount that you can afford to lose.I have never been fully repaid for any large loans that I have made to expats in Asia.It just does not happen.

I've helped plenty and have never been badly let down by any of them
And one or two have helped me also over the years.
However, it's important to have the ability 5o discern between desperate and degenerate folk.
The desperate might pay back but the degenerate just wants your pound of flesh and they will fuck off once they have it

If you choose to maintain friendships or associate with people of questionable morals or ethics then are you really surprised when their behaviour towards you exhibit questionable morals and ethics?
I have only been not repaid off on a handful of times out of loads of times of lending money to Khmer and Foreign. And some of those I have written off due to external circumstances. If your friends are all stealing scumbags then you might need to have a look at yourself.

The culture shock for me is the number of expats here that borrow and lend money from individuals.
It’s never come up as a topic anywhere else I’ve lived, which is particularly ironic for the fact that Cambodia has the lowest cost of living of anywhere I’ve been.
Anyone have any insights as to why levels of financial literacy or ability to support oneself is so low amongst expats here?

For one, I think the term expat is misused for many foreigners in Cambodianerdlinger wrote: ↑Sun Jun 04, 2023 10:44 amThe culture shock for me is the number of expats here that borrow and lend money from individuals.

If it's so common, presumably some of the shifty types are reading. How about another poll: Have you stiffed another foreigner in Cambodia?

It commonly refers to people who leave their home country with the intention of one day returningផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote: ↑Sun Jun 04, 2023 11:49 amDo you want to redefine the word?violet wrote: ↑Sun Jun 04, 2023 11:04 amFor one, I think the term expat is misused for many foreigners in Cambodianerdlinger wrote: ↑Sun Jun 04, 2023 10:44 amThe culture shock for me is the number of expats here that borrow and lend money from individuals.

Not sure about that. Unless the meaning has evolved.violet wrote: ↑Sun Jun 04, 2023 12:04 pmIt commonly refers to people who leave their home country with the intention of one day returningផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote: ↑Sun Jun 04, 2023 11:49 amDo you want to redefine the word?violet wrote: ↑Sun Jun 04, 2023 11:04 amFor one, I think the term expat is misused for many foreigners in Cambodianerdlinger wrote: ↑Sun Jun 04, 2023 10:44 amThe culture shock for me is the number of expats here that borrow and lend money from individuals.

Expatriate comes from ‘Ex patria’ which means ‘out of native country’.
I.e anybody who lives outside their native country. Could be refugees, retirees as well as temporary relocators.
Nobody wants to borrow from me any more since a spate of debtors died on me: 4 of the cunts in a year. You can't exactly turn up to the wake with a bill. Selfish fuckers.

This may or may not be true, but I don’t see how it affects my question in any way - it’s reasonable to assume that whatever definition I’m using, I’m applying consistently to all countries.violet wrote: ↑Sun Jun 04, 2023 11:04 amFor one, I think the term expat is misused for many foreigners in Cambodianerdlinger wrote: ↑Sun Jun 04, 2023 10:44 am

Meanwhile they are enjoying frolicking with their 70 virgins in paradise.
Sounds like they won.
May all their virgins be Duran Duran fans.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote: ↑Sun Jun 04, 2023 1:19 pmMeanwhile they are enjoying frolicking with their 70 virgins in paradise.
