Is living in a Highrise Building good ?
High Rise Buildings seem to be in fashion Looking at the developments in PP, Shv over the past 10 years the ultimate goal seems to be "The Sky is the limit". But who on this planet really wants to live in a 45 Storey high Building ? For me such buildings are "suicide towers" and perhaps a good place to stop inbetween travels. Most of these buildings (at least those that i know in Thailand) lack of a proper maintenance once they are sold to investors. The latest developement 40+ Story High Rise at Kampot's Riverside is proof that the Investors Madness knows no limits.
This is PP's latest:
Urban Living Solutions (ULS) the innovative lifestyle development firm behind some of Cambodia's most creative spaces is putting Phnom Penh on the global map as it publicly launches Odom — its grandest project to date.
After the success of internationally award-winning projects such as Factory Phnom Penh, Bakong Village, and Rose Apple Square, ULS now sets its sights on redefining work-life standards for modern Cambodians.
Odom is a two-tower development situated on 5,825sqm of prime real estate on Norodom Boulevard. Standing 45 stories high, Odom Tower offers 40,000sqm of Grade A strata-title offices — ideal for businesses with a long-term projection and those who want to build an asset rather than just pay rent for an indefinite amount of time. Its fully customisable office space policy allows combining different pre-sized offices or even buying a whole floor (up to 1,515sqm) to create the space needed.
Adjacent to the commercial tower is the 30-storey residential building named "Odom Living." This building has 18,000sqm of spacious three and four-bedroom family apartments and one and two-bedroom homes for young urban professionals. All condos at Odom Living come with two spacious balconies, design-focused bathrooms, and fully equipped kitchens, ideal for those who enjoy cooking and entertaining at home.
Linking the commercial and residential towers is Odom Square, a five-storey layered garden and commercial space that serves as ULS' answer to the redundancy in Phnom Penh's retail sector. More than just a mall with the same brand of coffee shops and fashion outlets, this space will be a green-filled community gathering spot that will also be home to young businesses making new, creative approaches to retail, food, and beverage.

If you want to live near everything in a big city you usually have to live in high rise. I have lived most of my life in high rises and I like it. Everything is within walking distance or maybe even within same building.
Would feel awful to jump to my SUV every time I want to go get a coffee from my "corner" shop.

The saying “buy cheap, buy twice” applies very much to Cambodian housing. Despite their bad reputation I’ve been more happy in high rise buildings than in cheap flats.
@Alexandra. When did you last looked down from the 40. floor of an apartment building ? Nothing wrong with a cheap flat with mom and pa shops around the corner, life people that you can share a coffee (not Starbuck but local), share smiles with locals . A moto is all i need to get around PP and SUV's are a sign of general degeneration. Who want's to bring kids in a truck sized piece of sh..t to school/kindergarten ? Living in one of these "all included" highrises sound like living in a ghetto like in Baghdad's green zone or "Hotel California" :you're welcome to check in but you can never leave. You can rent on lower floors if you’re afraid of heights.Expatissimo wrote: ↑Sun Sep 12, 2021 4:13 pmWhen did you last looked down from the 40. floor of an apartment building ?
Water leaks, mold, bathroom floors that stay wet for ever, noisy neighbors, no backup power, awful furniture, just to mention a few.Expatissimo wrote: ↑Sun Sep 12, 2021 4:13 pmNothing wrong with a cheap flat
Which high rise building isn’t around the corner from mom and pop shops and cheap cafes?Expatissimo wrote: ↑Sun Sep 12, 2021 4:13 pmwith mom and pa shops around the corner, life people that you can share a coffee (not Starbuck but local), share smiles with locals .

You seem to have this weird vision of Cambodia that doesn't exist in real life.Expatissimo wrote: ↑Sun Sep 12, 2021 4:13 pm@Alexandra. Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
I’ve read on numerous websites and interviews with The Eagles that Hotel California isn’t actually about a hotel.

If you can afford the rent, it's probably nice to live in one of those new skyscrapers that have popped up with great force lately. The rooftop pool, western style kitchen, proper air conditioning, pest control, secure access, secure parking and great views. But the price is also more than most locals can afford. The neighbors will therefore be Chinese and other multinationals. I saved my money by paying much less rent with an older style rental. So you live with other locals and I love the rustic vibe. Power cuts are rare these days. I have never felt in danger of living like this in the last decade here. The best is to find an area without too many other whites. Often newcomers, and rude or just clumsy, or just drunk.
@y YaTingPom. Of course "Hotel California" as on the record cover doesn't exist. The real name for this beautiful hotel in Beverly Hills is called "The Beverly Hills Hotel" and yes it isn't the mental institution for drug addicts either that the song is about. But comparisons are allowed as far as the people in the orig. song and western drug addicts in Cambodia is concerned. Most can't afford a rent in one of these news suicide towers anyway.
Just for orientation purpose of looking at the hight of a 45 floor highrise. The NY World Trade Center had 110 Floors before it was knocked down on 9/11 so the new high rise building in Kampot and PP is about half of that. Now think about the risks it involves to live in one of them >
better hold a parachute handy.

I'm sure buildings in Kampot and Kep are high on the Taliban's target list.Expatissimo wrote: ↑Mon Sep 13, 2021 11:07 am@y YaTingPom. The tallest mobile crane is 68 meters. Doesn’t matter what city you’re in you’ll be fucked anyway.
Fire suppression, exits and escape routes and proper building regulations are the only defence.
Even modern western cities have issues with fires and built quality - London, Miami, Singapore etc.

@ ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ . Not really on the Taliban List. The US have proven that they can fly a B25 Bomber into the Empire State Building in NY. This was probably the textbook for the World Trade Center 9/11 attack which brough both towers down.
