The Rain Man is full of shit and does not have a tenth of the balls that she has. She stayed in Country, he runs away on his French passport everytime he stubs his toe on Khmer politics.

She was locked up in her palatial mansion on the shore of the lake in Rangoon, his option was Prey Sar.

… which returns you full circle to Playboy’s point. If the guy had spent even one night as a political prisoner in Cambodia (so much the better in Prey Sar, although I highly doubt it) then he would’ve done infinitely more in one day to advance “Cambodian democracy” than he’s managed to achieve in four years of mincing about in Paris. A pissweak effort by any measure.Bosco wrote:She was locked up in her palatial mansion on the shore of the lake in Rangoon, his option was Prey Sar.

Not so much.Bosco wrote:Non sequitur.
Your point, I thought, was that her achievements are not comparable to his because she suffered less hardship than he would've. My point, maybe poorly made, was that he woudnt've suffered any real hardship either: as we saw with Mu Sochua, the CPP is not in the business of creating opposition martyrs. Making a political prisoner of Sam Rainsy in Prey Sar is one of the few things that could do some serious damage to the CPP, which is why you'd be a fool to believe they'd try it.

ASSK was certainly detained on several occasions for extended periods of time in an annex of Insein Prison. Insein is one of the most notoriously over-crowded prisons in the world. Admittedly she served to overwhelming majority of her several incarcerations at home.

I lived about 300 metres down the road from Ma Suu's "palatial" mansion, and any description of it as palatial is drawn either from your imagination or from the white-anting comments made after his release by the CIA stooge who swam there on cue to have her charged immediately prior to her impending release and thus unable to participate in forthcoming elections, certainly not by any person who saw it during her internment there.
Keep in mind that she's the daughter of the murdered founding Prime Minister of the country and the house would once have been impressive, I've seen photos of its recent renovation and it does look great. Now. But up until when I left in 2011, it looked like a mouldy, beaten down glorified shack. The regime had not permitted ANY maintenance for the previous 20 years. The roof leaked in numerous places and, let me tell you, it can fucking piss down rain in Yangon. As a result of the house being on Inya lake it flooded several times over the years and repeated calls for assistance to clean it up or replace damaged chattels were denied.
Here's a pic of the "palatial mansion" from 2009, when the swimmer did his dastardly deed...

if he stayed 1 day as a political prisoner here, do you really think he'd have lived to serve a second?
Those who begin coercive elimination of dissent soon find themselves exterminating dissenters. Compulsory unification of opinion achieves only the unanimity of the graveyard.

Living 300 metres down the road you had as much knowledge of the inside as a Somalian goat herder. In short, none, zero. Compared to the standard Burmese household her place was palatial. My view on the inside was from a clip filmed inside just after the opening up, think it was a BBC film crew. I'd have been happy to live there whereas I would do literally anything to avoid Prey Sar.
They tried, convicted and sentenced him in absentia.shitegeist wrote:Sam Rainsy in Prey Sar is one of the few things that could do some serious damage to the CPP, which is why you'd be a fool to believe they'd try it.
My point is that the two are completely different. Different people, facing completely different circumstances, in very different countries. Comparing the two shows a complete misunderstanding of the situation in either one or both of the countries. The only real similarity between them is that they are opposition leaders in less than democratic countries. That is why she met him, and why he met her.
