In the early 1990s, the international community - through what was then the largest-ever UN peacekeeping operation - made an idealistic attempt to remake broken, war-ravaged Cambodia into a functioning liberal democracy.
Twenty-five years later, Hun Sen, the man who ran the country before the UN arrived, remains in charge and Cambodia is on the eve of a one-sided election widely seen as marking the end of that era.

The UN has always overblown its attempts to bring democracy here. It had these lofty ideals and spent a lot of money here but failed in its mandate. Notice how articles like this always fail to mention that the civil war continued long after the UN left.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
No, because they didn’t succeed in the 90s so it’s a silly article.

If that's what your friend is asking, I wouldn't bother trying to explain the answer. He's either too fucking retarded to understand the concept of voting and democracy or gone has full retard with Trump Derangement Syndrome.Miguelito wrote:When does the UN plan to bring democracy to the U.S.?

You don’t see the irony in the US “spreading democracy” when the US isn’t even a real democracy itself?bipolar bear wrote:If that's what your friend is asking, I wouldn't bother trying to explain the answer. For starters, the US is a Republic, not a democracy. It’s a country where the victor can win with millions less than the popular vote. It’s a country where 700,000 citizens in its capital have no representation in Congress, and are constantly denied self rule with decisions of people from states thousands of miles away being forced upon them. A country that legalized slavery and over the course of its history has limited who can vote. A country that has nearly perfected the art of gerrymandering, and that allows people to stay in positions of power for decades.
Or perhaps everyone should be in democracies - then the majority can just submit their rule on others. Israel becomes a Jewish state against the will of 20% of their Arab population - that’s great democracy in action.

Yes, it is true that the US isn't a PURE democracy, but it is a hybrid form of democracy known as REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY. Some state and local politicians are actually popularly-voted into office. In the electoral collage system, most electors themselves are voted based on the popular vote. In my state, our nearly all executives, including the governor, is elected using popular-vote. Various election-systems are used from the local all the way to federal level.Miguelito wrote:You don’t see the irony in the US “spreading democracy” when the US isn’t even a real democracy itself?bipolar bear wrote:If that's what your friend is asking, I wouldn't bother trying to explain the answer.
