Yesterday a landlord named through Facebook as Ly Heang posted a complaint regarding a Chinese tenant who left his rented house dirty and smelly and he did not pay the bills. "The electricity bill for just one month is $400", said the landlord. The tenant wrote Chinese graffiti on the floor and on the walls, making the landlord regret renting it to him.
The tenant was named and shamed on Facebook. The landlord posted a picture of the tenant with a caption saying that he was a Chinese dog who rented a house but did not pay the rent or electricity bill and he destroyed the house.
The post attracted many comments from people who wrote that they thought Chinese people are very impolite and disrespectful, and that some of them engage in criminal activities. Some said that there are good and bad people from China and that they had encountered some who were very good.
A Chinese businessman who has been in Phnom Penh for many years told reporters that Cambodian people's attitude towards Chinese people had changed in recent years.
"It is not uncommon for foreigners to commit crimes in Cambodia. Last year, two Japanese people robbed and killed a taxi driver in Siem Reap. Instead of cursing the Chinese, it is better to do something honest to improve the image", said the businessman.

True. But the police blotter itself tells a different story. From about 90 foreigners a year arrested from all countries around the world to about the same nowadays, plus over 1000 Chinese yearly since the BRI. Thus the Cambodian reaction.Bong Burgundy wrote: ↑Thu Oct 08, 2020 7:31 pm

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
The fact that the Khmers have started to hate the Chinese more than the evil Yuon is pretty incredible.

The Vietnamese? A very unexpected answer. Were they doing the same kind of things the Chinese are growing infamous for these days, or was it more political, perhaps related to 20th century conflicts?Lucky Lucan wrote: ↑Thu Oct 08, 2020 10:32 pmVietnamese.techietraveller84 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 08, 2020 9:17 pmWhat group used to be considered the most troublesome foreigners before the BRI, Americans?
Does that mean that Khmers will hate Khmers? Since so many of them are half-Chinese \O/sudo su wrote: ↑Fri Oct 09, 2020 1:41 amThe fact that the Khmers have started to hate the Chinese more than the evil Yuon is pretty incredible.

With a different language and passport, it's all too easy to see them as "others," no matter how closely related. European conflicts over the years are a strong testament to this.
