According to unofficial statistics, the country has shut down over 600 KTVs, massage parlors and other entertainment venues, but casinos remain open.
Yesterday Prime Minister Hun Sen said that the city will not close down and he denied Facebook rumors about a lockdown and a provincial travel ban. In the same speech he urged people to be careful and follow pandemic prevention rules, wear masks, wash hands and maintain social distance.
Since the Hungarian incident on November 3, 2,553 direct and indirect contacts have been traced, of which 4 tested positive for Covid-19. The rest were placed in quarantine for medical observation. The third tests will be carried out on Saturday and Sunday and the results will determine whether people will be released from quarantine or if there will be further escalation of the epidemic.
To prevent the spread of Covid-19, various emergency measures have been taken across the country. The Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Education and other departments have ordered their staff to work remotely from home. The Ministry of Health has banned public gatherings such as weddings. Over 600 entertainment venues in major cities have been urgently closed. Phnom Penh closed 429 entertainment venues, Sihanoukville closed 96 and Siem Reap closed over 40. The closed venues include KTVs, nightclubs, beer gardens, massage parlors, gyms, cinemas, etc.
Some people are questioning why casinos have been allowed to remain open. Casinos were previously closed on April 1 and were not allowed to gradually reopen until July 3.
A Chinese businessman in Phnom Penh told reporters that the casinos in Phnom Penh are currently operating as normal and the people who go to gamble do not seem to be affected by the new epidemic prevention measures. "The casinos also provide masks and disinfection supplies for free. They check the temperature at the entrance and everybody wears a mask", he said.
The Chinese businessman said that those who had been in contact with the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs are still in quarantine being observed. "Today they have been in quarantine for 11 days. If the number of confirmed cases does not increase in 3 days time, it may be a false alarm."
