Cambodians, like most nationalities, have always travelled abroad, often to seek better opportunities. The biggest exodus was prior to the KR takeover, I imagine, not since the end of the war. Most leaving now are better-off people seeking better education for their kids, and, granted, a slightly more democratic govt.R2d3 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 06, 2021 9:20 pmAlso there's a lot more Cambodians that are living outside the country then there are expats in the country. with no plans to return while it remains a dictatorship. Wonder why that is?Guest9999 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 06, 2021 11:00 amThis is no argument against your vote for a 'benevolent' dictatorship, ragtag, but I thought the country with the greatest number of expats in Cambodia has been China, for a few years now, and Vietnam for 30 years before that.
As you could have said with equal validity, If things are so cool at home, why are they here? Authoritarian dictatorships are not a cure alls for all ills.
Anybody who thinks Rainsy would fulfill his promises is naïve, in my opinion. Someone on here put it very well long ago, when they said he's just a pig who wants his turn at the trough. I take stability over the uncertainty and potential civil unrest any day.
How many Americans/Brits/Australians/ South Africans/ French live abroad (as percentages)? It would be interesting to see.
