18 months after the sinking of his boat and alas other misadventures, Jean Pierre Freneau calls for solidarity to rearm the Kanika.
On November 2, 2020 the Kanika sank. The Kanika is this superb catamaran measuring 26 meters whose sleek design participated in the beauties of the Mekong. Its 5 decks could accommodate up to 90 passengers comfortably.
10 years earlier the boat had been hit by one of these barges carrying sand. It had been repaired, but a weakness remained.
“A day before the sinking, the captain reported a vibration in the port hull. The decision to put it ashore had been taken, but the same night it sank,” confides Jean-Pierre Freneau, its owner.
Jean Pierre and his wife Géraldine are well known for their associative commitments in Phnompenhois circles. They settled in Cambodia 8 years ago but had been coming there regularly for 22 years.
Out of the water, the boat was transferred to the Koh Dach shipyards, where it was built 14 years ago. Hulls, decks, engines, propeller shafts and holds...everything was refurbished, the work lasted 9 months and cost $60,000.
t was then taken back to the quay of the Himawari for renovation and rearming. Alas, months ago its former captain completely looted it with the help of accomplices.
“In one night, they emptied it from the hull to the upper deck, taking everything away… Kitchen equipment, bar equipment, engine parts, the generator, even the electric cables, ” confides Jean Pierre, bitterly.
The police were of course alerted, but the investigation seems to be stalling. Nearly 15,000 dollars flew away.
Today, refusing to be discouraged, Jean Pierre and Géraldine are launching a substantive appeal. They need 20,000 US$ to get their boat back in shape for June and relaunch the "sunset" dinners and private parties that have made their reputation.
“ The requests are pouring in with the reopening of the borders . confides Jean Pierre, sad at not being able to honor them.

The top sailing channels on YouTube, that's all they do is beg, and when they're not begging they're trying to flog you something.
iirc, it was named after the first owner, Kanika?

from memory that vessel has gone under 3 times, i was offered that boat back in 2013,but the price was double what i think it was worth at the time, as it needed lots of work and had already at that time been sank once, the name of the vessel is the Kanika, but they also have the Queen Mary so they can still do tours, anyway the french guy that purchased the boat paid double to what the worth of the vessel was(IMO). the biggest issue in Phnom Penh is where to park your vessels at a reasonable price in a safe area. and of course having trusted staff on board 24/7.
It was a Frenchman involved with boats who bought and restored the house that became La Villa, on the river in Battambang. (Google it) Anyone know him?
(He sold it many years ago, but after putting a lot into it, I'm sure he tripled his initial investment.)

Running a business and begging for donations. Classy. They should have known to secure their belongings after all this time in Cambodia. Even then nothing is safe. We had our motorbike completely stripped in PP. Thieves could not open the door so chose instead to take everything they could detach. Police is useless. Better buy some pigs, according to some movies they know how to handle any thief you catch haha.

If I read that story correctly, the owner miscalculated removing the boat from the water after hearing worrying noises and it sank. He then didn't ensure its security and it was looted: now he wants free money to make that right. However, he does have another boat and therefore the means to make money to repair the boat, but he would rather other people paid it for him.
I think I'll give that particular charitable cause a very wide berth.
