Dodgy Chinese with Cambodian passports + Birmingham City FC
Not, perhaps, the most easy of reads, but interesting links between shady Chinese 'businessmen' and a crappy Midlands football club.

Bringing the news. You stay classy, nas, Cambodia.
What's the thing with shady businesspersons buying football clubs? Outside of the big ones, where you get the publicity too, they can't be very profitable. Are they tax efficient, good for laundering?
Yeah, the last owner was Chinese (maybe Hong Kong or Taiwanese) and all-but bankrupted the club when hew got jailed for laundering. The club has been steadily asset-stripped for the last few years.
Funnily enough, I was flying over the football ground on Saturday on my way back here.
Once you’ve bought everything else that’s on the list, along with an American football team or island.
pew, pew, pew, pew!
But these guys don't get the joy of ownership, as you would with a super-yacht or an island..
I don't know where Birmingham City is - actually I didn't know there was such a football club, but presumably you strip it then develop the site if the club owns it?

Not sure about Birmingham City but others have huge profits in selling kit, Man U, Chelsea etc plus advertising rights.
Maybe it’s a way of legally losing money for tax reasons?
Who knows. Football (soccer) is dull.
pew, pew, pew, pew!
Finally got around to reading the full thing, and it is fascinating. Even if you're not interested in football or Birmingham City in particular I gleaned two things..
1. New found understanding of part of the Boeung Kak Development.
2. How little Seatel holds a key to what was once a English Premier League club's survival. I wouldn't be putting money on that horse for a while!
Intrigued to find out what happens when a Chinese "bong thom" runs out of cash because his Cambodian business runs out of steam & he can't flee back to China or Hong Kong.

Yes there’s a long history of organised criminal types owning football clubs in the UK - money launderers, etc, with links to Mediterranean organised crime groups and families. Lebanese, I think…. or was it Cypriots? Probably a few members of those families kicking around in Cambodia and making use of the casinos.not that you’d be able to tell. The big families ensure their children are well-educated and embedded in all sorts of places that are useful to them.
there are definitely a lot of organised criminal types with Cypriot passports in CambodiaGuest wrote: ↑Wed Apr 06, 2022 12:36 pmYes there’s a long history of organised criminal types owning football clubs in the UK - money launderers, etc, with links to Mediterranean organised crime groups and families. That’s a ridiculous claim. Which clubs are owned by organised criminal types?Guest wrote: ↑Wed Apr 06, 2022 12:36 pmYes there’s a long history of organised criminal types owning football clubs in the UK - money launderers, etc, with links to Mediterranean organised crime groups and families. It’s very confusing when guests argue with other guests and then it’s quoted.
pew, pew, pew, pew!
that was a great read, a good find.
as an aside, as he mentioned that while you cannot get a sausage and egg McMuffin, Burgershack in Kampot and Phnom Penh do a seriously good version
