"We are turning into a nation of whimpering slaves to Fear—fear of war, fear of poverty, fear of random terrorism, or suddenly getting locked up in a military detention camp on vague charges of being a Terrorist sympathizer." HST
For all those who think Mikeys Bar was to be avoided , Tim Page was a regular.

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Mikey's was to Siem Reap what The Walkabout was to Phnom Penh.Lucky Lucan wrote: ↑Fri Aug 26, 2022 1:39 pmWhere was Mikey's? Was it on the corner of 136 and Riveride?

I am sooooo very sorry if you can't understand or appreciate my sarcastic facetiousness.

He certainly lived the life that was only possible in his time. From what I saw, he was pretty cool about it all. Pretty fearless. I don't see any resemblance to Hopper in any of the old photos of him. Just a cool young British man who wanted to change the world around him with bravery and indication. Of course, he lived a life of excess that is hard to imagine in these times of strict press ethics. He was in the conflict zone, with all that entails of outrage and transgressive lifestyle factors. There was a party then, between trips to the front, that most people could only dream of participating in today. But no, for all intents and purposes, as a fan of all things quirky and real, it doesn't look like the crazy life, as described by the "American Photojournalist" character in Apocalypse Now.

I have to admire anyone who can manage to run around with bullets and bombs going off all around and still manage to take good photos. I'd be fucking terrified.

Shankill Road isn’t very photogenic to be fair.Lucky Lucan wrote: ↑Fri Aug 26, 2022 9:20 pmI have to admire anyone who can manage to run around with bullets and bombs going off all around and still manage to take good photos. I'd be fucking terrified.
I’ll check out that Meta House on the 2nd. See you there LL.

Not sure what I meant with the Shankhill Rd comment. I was drunk.
Anyhoo. I met a war Journo years back. Nice chap. Talked about Iraq, where he’d just come back from, Syria etc.
So we pulled up outside Portland St (Wogan house) and whilst we were waiting for someone else there was this almighty crash (a metal sheet with glass had fallen from a crane). I jumped out my skin but you know what he didn’t even flinch, just raised his eyebrows and casually turn his head and said “That was jolly loud”.
Cool as a cucumber.
