Good to see half of the locals are not masked up. Let's test those donated Chinese vaccines... Got it twice even though vaxed so I don't really care anymore. We all die some day.

Just to be clear is this significant as in it’s the first group of Chinese tourists to arrive officially since Covid?
^ No. It’s the first time a pretty plane with wavey red lines has ever landed at SHV.
Just happened to be full of Chen.

SIHANOUKVILLE, Cambodia, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia on Friday welcomed the arrival of Chinese travelers after the world's second-largest economy optimized its COVID-19 strategy early this month, officials said.
A Ruili Airlines flight, carrying more than 100 passengers from Kunming in southwestern China's Yunnan Province, landed in Sihanoukville in southwestern Cambodia on Friday morning, receiving a warm welcome from local authorities.
Speaking to reporters at the welcoming event, Hor Sarun, secretary of state for Cambodia's Ministry of Tourism, said Cambodia is ready to welcome all Chinese people and tourists.
"There is neither COVID-19 restriction, nor COVID-19 test on Chinese travelers, and they are free to travel everywhere in Cambodia," he said.
Chea Aun, secretary of state for the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation, said he expected the number of Chinese tourists to Cambodia to reach the pre-pandemic level within a couple of years.
"We hope that the number of Chinese travelers to Cambodia and other countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations will again increase sharply," he said.
China was the largest source of foreign tourists to Cambodia in the pre-pandemic era, a report from the Ministry of Tourism said, adding that the kingdom received 2.36 million Chinese tourists in 2019, generating about 1.8 billion U.S. dollars in revenue.
Tourism Minister Thong Khon has told Xinhua that Cambodia is projected to attract at least 1 million Chinese tourists in 2023, an expected increase from merely 110,000 in 2022.
"China is the most important outbound tourism market for the world, so China's resumption of outbound tourism is very beneficial not only to Cambodia, but also to the whole world," he told Xinhua.
Thourn Sinan, chairman of the Pacific Asia Travel Association Cambodia chapter, said China's resumption of outbound tourism would give a boost to global tourism growth.
"Not only Cambodia but also the whole world are waiting for the return of the Chinese tourists to their countries," he told Xinhua. "The presence of Chinese tourists has greatly contributed to the development of the tourism industry in Cambodia."■

Can anyone explain Sihanoukville to me? I went there not long ago and apart from a fairly nice stretch of beach the entire city was an absolute dump. Abandoned building projects everywhere, arsey PassApp drivers that either kept insisting on double the fare or would take us to a totally different destination… didn’t even spot any nice looking Chinese restaurants. It’s the only place in Cambodia I’ve ever not felt safe walking around at night.
Did I somehow manage to miss the nice part of town, or is my assessment about right?

There is multiple great chinese restaurants here. One even has Michelin star chef working for them. Also great western, indonesian, korean and malaysian restaurants too.nerdlinger wrote: ↑Sun Jan 29, 2023 1:06 amCan anyone explain Sihanoukville to me? Why wouldn't you feel safe? There are actually streets lights and pavements in most parts of the city what cannot be said about Phnom Penh or Kampot for example.
There is much less crime that affect westener or local, than in Phnom Penh or Kampot. Kampot has lately has had huge problem with house robberies. In Sihanoukville last year I think I heard one case. Bag snacthing daily thing in Phnom Penh and Kampot. In Sihanoukville bag snatching doesn't happen at all. I rarely lock my scooter in Sihanoukville. Would not do that in Phnom Penh for surel
Sounds like you missed the nice part of town.

I think I mentioned a few reasons already. When a tuktuk driver takes you the opposite direction to where you want to go late at night and refuses to take directions or turn round, that’s cause for alarm.china_love wrote: ↑Wed Feb 01, 2023 1:34 am

Apart from that we also noticed some guy on a motorbike following us around for quite a while one evening, which was also pretty damn unsettling. Then on Otres Beach some apparently unaccompanied child kept trying to make friends with me, a white middle-aged man, which I guess *could* be innocently motivated but I didn’t want to hang around to find out.
All this in the space of a couple days. Not going back.

Incidentally as a side note, there is no such thing as a “Michelin-star chef” - the guide itself explicitly states this.

Outbound tourism by Chinese citizens, which had been suspended for nearly three years, has gradually resumed since China optimized its COVID-19 response and entry-exit policies on Jan. 8. More than 2.87 million Chinese traveled abroad during the 2023 Spring Festival, up 120.5% from the same period last year, according to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning. Southeast Asian countries benefited the most from the surge of Chinese tourists during the festival, data from Chinese travel platform Ctrip showed.
In light of the current situation of the epidemic, China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism announced on Jan. 20 that it would resume outbound group tours for Chinese citizens on a trial basis, starting Feb. 6, with 20 pilot destinations, nearly half of which are in Southeast Asia, including Cambodia.
In an interview with China.org.cn, Yuk Sengponleur, tourism attaché of the Embassy of Cambodia in China, expressed his excitement about Cambodia being included in China's first batch of 20 pilot destinations for outbound group travel. He said the return of Chinese tourists during the Spring Festival was an excellent start for Cambodia's tourism industry in 2023.
He noted that China is a large and densely populated country, the world's largest tourism market, and is close to Cambodia. The two countries maintain strong transportation links, including flights, and have established good cooperation and robust diplomatic ties. These factors have laid a solid foundation for constructing a community with a shared future for mankind, making it clear that the Chinese tourism market is a top-priority market for Cambodia. The vast potential of Chinese tourists, as well as Chinese investors, will drive the growth of tourism and boost Cambodia's socioeconomic development.
He also mentioned that Cambodia had been following the World Tourism Organization's guidance and had implemented various strategies and action plans to attract Chinese tourists, such as the "China Ready" strategy, which includes the establishment of a China Ready Center, language and culture training for officials and staff, Chinese-speaking tour guides, measures to attract Chinese investors, infrastructure support, and improved tourism services.
To welcome Chinese tourists, Cambodia has worked to improve seven areas of tourism services, including hotels, restaurants, tour operators, travel agents, resorts, supermarkets and souvenir shops. It has also established five criteria for customer services, including front-line staff who can speak Chinese, promoting Chinese language through digital means, Chinese product labels, and standard quality services.
He emphasized that Cambodia is ready and eager to welcome Chinese and international investors and tourists with open arms and without any health-related restrictions. He noted that since the announcement of its reopening in 2022, Cambodia has been steadily facilitating travel and removing health barriers.

Cambodia welcomes 1st Chinese flight, tourists to Siem Reap
Cambodia has welcomed the resumption of China Eastern Airlines flights to its Siem Reap cultural province, the country's Ministry of Tourism said in a press statement on Saturday.
China Eastern Airlines flight MU2091, carrying some 132 Chinese tourists, arrived at the Siem Reap International Airport from Shanghai Friday night and received a warm welcome from Cambodian tourism officials, local authorities and tour and travel operators, the statement said.
The Ministry of Tourism's Secretary of State Top Sopheak, who greeted the tourists upon their arrivals, said that China Eastern Airlines would operate direct flights between Shanghai and Siem Reap on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday weekly.
"The return of Chinese tourists and investors is a good sign for Cambodia's tourism and economy in the post-COVID-19 pandemic era," he said.
Sopheak said the Southeast Asian nation is expected to attract 4 million international tourists, including 800,000 to 1 million Chinese tourists, in 2023.
China was the largest source of foreign tourists to Cambodia in the pre-pandemic era, a Ministry of Tourism's report said, adding that the kingdom received 2.36 million Chinese tourists in 2019, accounting for 35.7 percent of total tourist arrivals to the country and generating about 1.8 billion U.S. dollars in revenue.
Chhay Sivlin, president of the Cambodia Association of Travel Agents, said the comeback of Chinese tourists gave "high hopes" for the country's tourism industry and economic growth in the post-pandemic era.
"I think the famed Angkor archaeological park in Siem Reap and coastal areas in Sihanoukville will remain the most attractive destinations for Chinese tourists," she told Xinhua.
Tourism is one of the four pillars supporting Cambodia's economy. The country attracted up to 6.61 million international tourists in 2019, generating a gross revenue of 4.92 billion dollars, according to the Ministry of Tourism.
