GUANGZHOU, March 16 (Xinhua) -- A team of Chinese soldiers departed for Cambodia on Thursday to participate in a China-Cambodia military drill.
The fifth installment of the joint military drill, code-named "Golden Dragon-2023," will be held from March 20 to April 8. A total of over 3,000 troops from the two armies will participate in the drill.
This year's event will focus on three parts, i.e. joint security exercises for major events, humanitarian work and cultural exchanges.
The drill is expected to consolidate and step up the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between the two countries, increase political mutual trust, expand military exchanges and enhance the anti-terrorism and humanitarian assistance capabilities of the two militaries.

Chinese, Cambodian warships hold unprecedented drill prior to joint exercise
The Type 071 comprehensive landing ship of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy which was carrying Chinese troops to participate in the upcoming China-Cambodia Golden Dragon-2023 joint exercise held an unprecedented drill with Cambodian vessels on Sunday.
After a voyage of nearly 100 hours across about 1,300 nautical miles, the Type 071 ship Jinggangshan arrived in Cambodian waters on Sunday and carried out an exercise over coordinated navigation and communications, according to a press the PLA Southern Theater Command released on the same day.
During the exercise, the Jinggangshan made contacts with two patrol boats of the Royal Cambodian Navy and established communications before practicing coordinated navigation in different formations, said the press release.
This is acknowledged as the first time that the militaries of China and Cambodia have conducted such a maritime exercise, said the PLA Southern Theater Command.
"In the two-hour navigation and communication exercise with the Cambodian navy, our organization and command were precise, coordination was close, and communications were smooth," Captain Xu Jinfeng, the commanding officer of the Jinggangshan, said in a Sunday report by China Central Television (CCTV).
The Jinggangshan was carrying Chinese troops from the Army, the Navy and the Joint Logistic Support Force of the PLA Southern Theater Command to participate in the Golden Dragon-2023 joint exercise with Cambodia. The ship set out from Zhanjiang, South China's Guangdong Province on Wednesday.
The joint naval exercise before the official start of the Golden Dragon-2023 joint drills marked a high level of comprehensive military exchange and cooperation between China and Cambodia, a Beijing-based military expert who requested anonymity told the Global Times on Sunday.
More naval interactions like this are expected in the future, the expert said.
During the voyage to Cambodia, the Jinggangshan practiced the handling of emergencies in order to boost the ship's capability in long-range delivery, another CCTV report said on Saturday.
The mission honed the sailors' ability to deal with emergencies due to the long voyage, the complex sea situations and the constantly changing weather conditions, the report said.
As the fifth joint exercise between the armed forces of China and Cambodia, the annual Golden Dragon-2023 will be held from Monday to April 8, with more than 3,000 personnel and over 300 vehicles from both sides participating in exercises focused on operations for the security of important events and humanitarian aid.

The Golden Dragon-2023 joint military exercise between China and Cambodia is scheduled to start on Monday in a training ground in Cambodia, with the focus on non-traditional security threats including terrorism, infectious diseases and natural disasters.
Amid foreign media reports claiming Cambodia's deepening ties with China have "raised concerns" in the US and neighbors in the region, experts said that the peacefully intended drill is unlike US-led joint exercises in the Asia-Pacific region that emphasize confrontation.
After arriving in Sihanoukville, Cambodia on Sunday on the Type 071 comprehensive landing ship Jinggangshan, Chinese troops participating in the Golden Dragon-2023 joint exercise rapidly unloaded their equipment and vehicles from the ship under the assistance of local Chinese companies, China Central Television (CCTV) reported on Monday.
The Chinese troops will mobilize to the exercise region on vehicles and launch the exercise on Monday, according to an exercise plan announced by the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Southern Theater Command in a press release.
Comprising three major parts - joint exercise on security for important events, humanitarian aid and cultural exchange - the exercise will focus on practicing for the manage and control of key target regions, the prevention and control of an unidentified infectious disease, the search and disposal of suspected explosives as well as the handling of slow, low and small flying objects.
A number of Southeast Asian countries have sent military officers to the exercise as observers, according to the press release.
The exercise, which will see over 3,000 personnel take part and is scheduled to last until April 8, marks the fifth China-Cambodia regular joint exercise since 2016, and is expected to enhance the two militaries' anti-terrorism and humanitarian aid capabilities.
Shortly before the Jinggangshan's arrival, the PLA Navy ship for the first time conducted a joint maritime exercise with the Royal Cambodian Navy on Sunday.
Some foreign media claimed that the China-Cambodia military cooperation has led to concerns among other countries, with Al Jazeera saying in a Monday report that Phnom Penh's close relationship with Beijing has sometimes proved to be a source of friction in Cambodia's relationship with other members of ASEAN due to the South China Sea issue.
In response, Chen Xiangmiao, director of the World Navy Research Center at the National Institute for South China Sea Studies, told the Global Times on Monday that the China-Cambodia joint exercise is a regularly arranged one that focuses on anti-terrorism, cross-border crime as well as medical aid and rescue, none of which is sensitive.
By comparison, US-led joint drills, including the Balikatan exercise with the Philippines and those with other countries in the Asia-Pacific region, are large-scale and feature main battle elements including surface combatants, submarines and warplanes, Chen said. Those US-led exercises are aimed at waging war, while the China-Cambodia joint exercise focuses on exchange and cooperation in non-traditional security fields, he said.
The public should understand that the real trouble maker stirring up confrontation in the region is the US, while China is looking to cooperate and contribute to peace and stability, observers said.
