De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) has become the first UK university to open a campus in Cambodia.
For the first time, local and international students will be able to study and earn a UK degree at a British university campus, located in the country’s capital, Phnom Penh.

The institution will be run by DMU, in partnership with global education provider Ed Peritus, and initially offer students a number of DMU courses in business, finance and IT.
The campus was opened at an event led by DMU’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Katie Normington, and His Excellency Dr Hang Chuon Naron, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport.
They were joined by Heather Wheeler MP, the UK Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to Cambodia, and Dominic Williams MBE, British Ambassador to Cambodia, together with Simon Bradbury, DMU’s Pro Vice-Chancellor International and Sakina Zafar, President DMU Kazakhstan and Managing Director, EdPeritus.

In a speech, Professor Normington spoke about DMU’s international outlook, and how the university is bringing the key elements of its empowerment strategy to each of its international campuses, which also include operations in Dubai, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
She said: “It is perhaps no surprise then that we are here in Cambodia, a country that is seeing rapid progress and growth in industry and a demand for high quality graduates.
“DMU Cambodia will be part of our global community initially focusing on business, finance and IT courses to support the needs to the country.”
The launch ceremony also signalled the start of the British Embassy’s Great British Education Month. Run by the British Embassy in Phnom Penh, the campaign aims to promote UK education sector excellence and to grow the link between UK and Cambodia in the field of education.
