Larry's 110 St Bar & Grill
Larry's 110 St Bar & Grill
When is it too early to pass judgement or to make public assessments on a bar? Open more than 6 weeks now, I have visited 5 times, and I suppose I am hoping some posters will tell me I am missing something.
All 5 of my visits have occurred between 6PM and 8PM, thus maybe the good vibes start after this time slot? I have found it boring to the point I want to slam my forehead down on the bar about 8 times in a row to get some sort of enjoyment out of my experience.
The wait staff seems more interested in their phones then smiling my way, asking me if I would like another drink, or thanking me for my visit. The last time I was there I had only one beer and was about to leave a $1 tip when the girl handed over the change, turned her back on me to gab with a co-worker and all in a blink of an eye. $1 tip back in the pocket. It was a 'pity-tip" to begin with, not a reward for good service. 4 of the 5 times my bottled beer was room temperature, and for a bar that should be icing its beer as early as 10AM I find it hard to swallow let alone order another one. Four of my five visits at least 5 plus minutes of empty-glass time pass before they ask me if I need another drink - all the while they are steadfastly texting away on their phones.
The menu and the food hitting the tables looks good… but I can never get past that first or second warm beer to be motivated to spend more time/money to try it out.
Music? So low may as well turn it off. Happy Hour with a thud.
The owner has been here many years? Seems like a good person with the best of intent. Is it better than I described?
When someone gets off work at 6 they want to go to a place that the beer is cold, the music is on at a decent level, and the bartenders smile and ask "another one Sir?"
Not here, not yet.

Went the first time t'other night, they had some kind of power problem. Larry is a good guy, I'll give him a chance to sort it out as I don't think he's run a bar before. I can keep an eye on it from across the street easily enough.
I've been too lazy to walk across the street from Garage to check it out thus far. One of these days......
That is really it in a nutshell. I suppose I won't go back until I start hearing really good things about it, I know he has good intent.

I'm not a fan of the place. The Motown/classic rock music is uninspired, the staff isn't great, and the staff is not even in any kind of uniforms. Worst of all is the layout with a narrow horseshoe bar that gives you an unobstructed and too close view of the patrons right across from you. I don't want to look directly at aging, alcoholic, chain smoking American dudes whenever I have a beer, it's like getting an unwanted visit from the ghost of Christmas future.

Nothing but an opinionated tourist. The Pope spends more time in countries than I do ! It is also not my place to comment on a gentleman's dress. A real 23 minute wonder, that obviously knows little about ovens and cooking in Cambodia.

They used to have an American guy working in the Kitchen, he worked at Charlie Harper's for a little while and was pretty popular. He's now moved to Kampot, claiming that due to the initial slow start of the bar, his services just weren't required. He made a decent Tex / Mex, not sure what food they're doing now.
Anyway, up there again soon and will give it a go.

Funny enough I gave it another try Friday evening - because I just couldn't get a seat in Shanghai bar, it was packed.
I agree with the OP, staff is extremely unattentive, bored and not in any sort of uniforms which makes the whole ambience look a bit amateur. I also agree with gavinmac re the lighting.
Sadly all in all, I don't see much atmosphere in the place, but hope that they will sort it out.
Larry did a great job at Shanghai and I was kind of expecting the new bar to have a similar touch...

Is that 'Bamboo' Swiss restaurant still open or has this place replaced it?

I like it. I don't drink beer often so can't comment on that, being a bourbon drinker. Food was excellent. I know most of the girls from other places, so I can call them by name if I need something.
But, I also really don't get out much anymore, so maybe my standards are different.

It's a classy looking place and the owner seems like a charasmatic guy with a big enough periphery of friends to kick start the business. You can certainly see that he's spemt some money on the interior design.
Downside? It was way to brightly lit when i was there which just over emphasised the sausage fest inside - maybe 25 rugged-looking, fifty something white men.
I'd go back if he made the lights a little dimmer and found a way of making his client base a little more diverse.

I forgot to mention the lights in my post, but I agree that it was too brightly lit.

I like watering holes with lights for a fucking change....you can see that the place is clean, which is more than I can say for most bars.

it needs some tweaking and they are working on it. the food is great and once they get the staff situation worked out it should fill a niche. they are planing on a bar bq out side and will do some of the meat fests we all like.
Why, oh why, didn't I take the Blue pill?
