He should spend a few months back in Cambodia revisiting his old borderland haunts. In most ways almost totally different, but some of the people are still there to be found. Some of his old contacts might have an interesting perspective on how things have developed. Some likely smug at their good fortune, others envious, but the direct, straight forward, practical nature I encountered in some I met felt different, and strangely honest. However, I was mostly asking merely practical questions (e.g. 'Can I get through that way?'), and a deeper upstanding might have shown them to be more similar to the rest of us: concerned about the impression we leave on the world. (Maybe deep down, even some guilt?)
Maybe he should take a short break from the bigger project he is temporarily stuck on, and do a short, light, piece or two for the Globe or similar. Anyway, a human interest angle might be a nice 2nd last chapter for his book. I too think he has some stories to share.
My phone call with Nate Thayer.
