Myanmar food gets alot of stick on here. Some go as far to say it's even as bad as Khmer food. I mean really?
Anyway, i have eaten a fair bit of Burmese food and enjoyed a fair bit of it.
So i'd like to dedicate this thread to delicious Burmese food, and hope to update it the more i travel in the country. Who fugging cares you twat
I'm sure its going to be a reaaaly long thread.
I will start with a genuinely delicious dish i had the other night.
Burmese noodle salad. It was with the noodle you get in regular noodle soups. Simple yet delicious and only 1000 kyat.

I find it quite amusing in Myanmar that all the road side restaurants seem to sell is maybe 4 or 5 curries in pots. So you got yer chicken curry, yer pork curry, yer goat curry, and some other curry. But every curry uses near the same curry sauce.
Its a good job i like curries. Girlfriend doesnt like the amount of oil they use though.
I guess burmese food is basically muslim food really.
Had these the other day. Grasshoppers?? Taste just like prawns with their shell on. Cant eat too many evidenly as can give you the shits.

for rooms all over the country and i have been from the far north (khmati) to the far south (Kwathoung)
for under $25, you get a very nice air con room with tv/cable, hot water an usually breakfast.
Some average under $20 and are same as what i pay in PP
Most i paid was $70 at a resort in Mokgok
Least was in the middle of nowhere, 6,000 kyat ($4.50) no electricity, no bathroom
While in country i prefer finding a Shan or Chinese restaurant, to much oil in the Burmese curry dishes for my stomach.
At any local restaurant, or $1.50 or so, you can get a huge plate of noodles or rice with chicken and kick in another $1.50 for a large bottle of Myanmar Lager Beer
many places offer draft as well and the beer stations is where the locals hang out at night

When in Yangon try out the Strand for cocktails. Same quality of cocktails as the Elephant Bar at Raffles here, but only $7 — and then half off at happy with free finger food passed around. Very popular with expats there.

Myanmar rooms are at the bottom of the value pile for SEA we have found. Interesting night thr othrr night aswell as when we looked around some small busy town north of Yangon all the hotels and guesthouses NONE could let foreigners stay as they didnt have licenses. We ended up staying the night in a shan monastery.Jep wrote:How much you paying for a room Dog? Beer is cheap here. Thai beers are actually cheaper than the local stuff near the border.
The curry rice shops are as cheap as chips. Alot offer all you can eat rice for 1500-2000 kyat. Pigged out on samosas and rotti filled with bean for lunch the other day washed down with the good burmese tea.
I heard the other day that burmese dont live that long. Not sure if the oily food has something to do with it.
None of the above really matters though as you come to Myanmar for the people.

Shitting through the eye of a needle this morning. Massive explosion. Just walked into your typical burmese roadside restaurant. No way i'm eating those oily curries today. The thought makes me wretch.
What is the love of swamping everything in oil about here?
I feel like eating something nice and clean like a poached egg on toast or something.
Please, for the love of god, no more oil!
As much as i love Myanmar, its gonna be good getting abit more variety as far as the food gos when we get to India.
Great people though.

Cheap and nasty oil to boot, whereas in India mostly ghee (clarified butter) is used. Are there no oil-free dishes available to you?

Well we are cycling so as a matter of convenience, we have just been pulling into the curry rice shops that ususlly have 4 or 5 pots of curries in a row, and you choose one. All the curries taste the same. They usually serve it with a sour soup and maybe some veggies.kinard wrote:Cheap and nasty oil to boot, whereas in India mostly ghee (clarified butter) is used. I'd love to find some Chinese food by the side of the road, but i just dont think theres enough demand for it??
Looking forward to maybe an indian dahl and a mango lassi to clean the system out abit.
