Interesting documentary about US links, insurgency by Thai Communist Party in the NE and efforts to combat it.

Haven’t had the chance to watch it yet, but the US certainly transformed Pattaya with the R&R base nearby.
A group of young men, escaping war to R&R on a beach in Thailand in the 60s/70s when anything went, drugs and booze and women and possible ptsd. Must have been a crazy time.

Quite interesting. Didn't realise there had been communist infiltration in the NW at that time. The US certainly weren't too concerned or they would have carpet bombed the area.
The point made about the binding influence Buddhism has on the population still applies today, and still not so much in the neighbouring countries..
The Bangkok newspaper editor was a delight to listen to, in fact I replayed him 3-4 times.

Anyone remember this classic from the eighties?
Nineteen, ner-ner-ner-ner-nineteen. Sa-Sa-Sa-Sa-Sa-Saigon. De-De-De-De-De-De-Destruction.
None of them received a heroes welcome. None of them.

The war against the Thai Communists was very under-reported, I believe the Thai Airforce did bomb many villages. It's interesting that the head of the CPK recently disappeared under mysterious circumstances in Laos.

Who was the head of the CPK? thought it was dissolved years ago.Lucky Lucan wrote: ↑Tue May 14, 2019 3:01 pmThe war against the Thai Communists was very under-reported, I believe the Thai Airforce did bomb many villages. I've read 3 Thai activists critical of the Thai monarchy and exiled in Laos have disappeared..

Haven't watched it yet, but your US links /communism comment reminded me of a later time when the US and China got together against Russia. One of the deals they made was to allow the continuance of the KR on the Cambodian/ Thai border after the Viets had whipped their asses. The deal was made by the Thais after it was agreed that the Chinese would stop supporting the Issaraks (communits) in Thailand. Things could have turned out very differently if that deal hadn't been made. No KR to keep fighting, and a communist insurgency for the Thais to deal with.Lucky Lucan wrote: ↑Tue May 07, 2019 12:00 amInteresting documentary about US links, insurgency by Thai Communist Party in the NE and efforts to combat it.
