The Tatmadaw are taking a lot of casualties if reports are to be believed. Quite a few have switched sides.
Sagaing is surprisingly active given it was a lot calmer in previous eras of junta rule. Many middle-class Burmans from Mandalay no doubt heavily involved.

I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

The location of the Karenni so close to Naypyidaw may play a role in the junta's increased interest in the region compared to previous conflicts when the leadership was based in Yangon.

It's a civil war that has been constantly running since independence. That was in 1948. Many of the insurgents are involved in trafficking heroin and methamphetamine. It's a bandit nation, nobody outside wants to get involved. Bangladesh is still looking after about one million Rohingas who were chased out by Aung San Suu Kyi and her government a few years ago. She supported that, international sympathy for her dropped off a cliff around then.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Victims are the wrong color.
Not enough oil at present
Thailand is already friendly with NATO
No real incentive

above is spot on> as i have said before,, not much oil but the world richest supply of jade (90% to china) lots of gems, teak an other natural resources
its a a great country full of fantastic, friendly people>
If they were white there would be outrage throughout the world
I wouldn't call it a ongoing civil war as LL stated, but merely ethnic groups fighting for what was promised them by the British an American's, (who they helped fight with against the Japanese in WW2), when Burma gained its independence.

OK, but apart from then, when have the UK or US not delivered on a promise?Phuket2006 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 18, 2022 7:06 amI wouldn't call it a ongoing civil war as LL stated, but merely ethnic groups fighting for what was promised them by the British an American's, (who they helped fight with against the Japanese in WW2), when Burma gained its independence.

They haven't all been ethnic groups fighting. Initially one of the biggest opposition groups was the Communist Party of Burma. The 8888 uprising wasn't ethnically based either - it was students and trade unions that rose against the government. The latest round of unrest was led by the People's Defence Force - again not an ethnic group.Phuket2006 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 18, 2022 7:06 amI wouldn't call it a ongoing civil war as LL stated, but merely ethnic groups fighting for what was promised them by the British an American's, (who they helped fight with against the Japanese in WW2), when Burma gained its independence.

Myanmar’s junta regime continues imposing death penalty and life imprisonment against civilians
- Myanmar’s junta regime has reportedly imposed death penalty against 7 University students, and another 8 students were sentenced to life imprisonment in Yangon on 17 March 2022.
The junta Tribunals’ continued sentencing of civilians to death and life imprisonment has shown Myanmar’s junta regime is further bolstering punishing pro-democracy activists and members associated with local resistance forces with lengthy imprisonment terms and death penalty in recent times.
Those whom the military junta tribunals have sentenced are University students and 15 in total, with 8 from Hlaing Tharyar, 3 from Dagon Seihkan and 4 from North Okkalapa. Of all, 3 from Hlaing Tharyar and 4 from North Okkalapa were sentenced each with the death penalty.
and the numbers continue to climb

One of the challenges in obtaining a solid international response is securing a regional response that the international community can get behind. Is ASEAN capable, or even willing?

Interesting approach from the Australian government to undermine the junta through encouraging defections.

now that Burma has opened to visitors< ( Lots of hoops and a 1 week quarantine) Lets see if any brave souls travel over and can get any info out>
UPDATE: just read visas suspended March 20th till march 31 because of covid. https://evisa.moip.gov.mm/
I've written a friend in Mandalay asking if ur free to travel, ( like to the Chin and Shan states where the worst atrocities / bombings of buildings are taking place
I'm tempted if i can travel freely but somehow i dont see that being allowed

Good question. I have a friend in Hpa-an, however all of my Yangon/Mandalay/Naypyidaw colleagues appear to be sitting tight (though one seems to pop over to Thandwe on occasion).Phuket2006 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 24, 2022 7:20 amI'm tempted if i can travel freely but somehow i dont see that being allowed
