Stickman is back?
Checked the site tonight for some strange reason and lo and behold it sounds as if he may be back in action...

Yep, Stick is back. Really thought it was over but nice to be invited back to have another crack.

I might start reading it but Thailand isn’t the same since I visited in the 50/60s/70s/80s/90s/00s #Pucketrichard.
The website it from the 90s.

The only places that haven’t changed are shit and no one wants to visit, Corby and Tipperary town as examples.
Before someone discovers a place it’s been discovered before.

Arguably, some places don't change much from the perspective of a tourist.YaTingPom wrote: ↑Mon Feb 07, 2022 3:17 pmThe only places that haven’t changed are shit and no one wants to visit, Corby and Tipperary town as examples.

I'll defer to the Poms on this, but my experience has been that the UK doesn't seem to have changed all that much over the years. I'll refrain from commenting on 'societal developments' and the like, but we are talking within the context of tourism, and thus such changes are less relevant. The UK I visited in December was basically identical to the one I visited in the 90s and 00s, though admittedly i was much younger then and may not remember things as they were.
The only big change I noticed in 2021 was the advent of giant, Yank-style malls in the smaller cities, which I definitely don't recall seeing in 2015.
Hell has not changed much, but plenty of people still go there.YaTingPom wrote: ↑Mon Feb 07, 2022 3:17 pmThe only places that haven’t changed are shit and no one wants to visit, Corby and Tipperary town as examples.

Expats see the difference but you’re right a tourist wouldn’t notice much and especially not socioeconomic changes.Starving Pelican wrote: ↑Mon Feb 07, 2022 3:26 pmArguably, some places don't change much from the perspective of a tourist.YaTingPom wrote: ↑Mon Feb 07, 2022 3:17 pmThe only places that haven’t changed are shit and no one wants to visit, Corby and Tipperary town as examples.

So to answer the question is anywhere the same, no. Go back a week later and things would have changed, on a small scale but still.
Sihanoukville and many places in Thailand, which changed a lot after my visits in the 90s but apparently it was different in the 80s but to me it felt unspoiled and underdeveloped, especially Koh Samui and Hua Hin.
Cambodia in the last 5 years has changed a lot and not just because overseas investment. Locals have more money then back then and wether that’s all built on borrowed money it’s immaterial (the wests economies are built on debt).

London changed a whole lot between when I first lived there in the mid 80s and when I left in 2003. It was very run-down in the 80s, there were whole streets of derelict or squatted houses and there were still bombed out blocks in the east end. Canary Wharf was still actual docklands then. At the same time most high streets still look much as they did then, just different shops.Starving Pelican wrote: ↑Mon Feb 07, 2022 3:26 pm

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Been watching Minder on YT and it’s pretty grim in the film locations. A lot has been gentrified since then with whole estates vaporized and new chic loft apartments and new housing developments.Lucky Lucan wrote: ↑Mon Feb 07, 2022 7:08 pmLondon changed a whole lot between when I first lived there in the mid 80s and when I left in 2003. I don't get the attraction to Stickman. His blog is really no more interesting than a travel vlog youtube. Many of the articles actually leave me with a bitter taste in my mouth, as they occasionally reek of the out-of-touch Baby Boomer worldview, such as when he compared his plight to Tuktuk drivers and bar girls: I had it hard too! When I was a kid I started out at the bottom delivering newspapers. But I worked hard and within a year I had 10 employees!
YAWN I don't need to read that stuff...
And then there's the whole thing about leaving Thailand forever and never coming back, this time for sure! ...and less than a year later he's back in the country...

I enjoy his Sunday column. I skip thru the girly bar stuff, only read the informative stuff.
His rants over 20years have made my tours of duty in Bangkok a breeze.
