Entering Vietnam with passport expiring in 5 months
Entering Vietnam with passport expiring in 5 months
My girlfriend bought a ticket from Manila to HCMC. Her passport is Philippines. Her passport expires in 5 months. Viet policy says one needs 6 months left on the passport to enter. Question: do they strictly enforce this? Guess it would be the airline in Manila who might spot this. Anyone have experience in this matter?

Of course they enforce it.
Get her a new passport.
Get her a new passport.
Bringing the news. You stay classy, nas, Cambodia.
Does anybody know why they it's even a rule? I.e. you have 5 months left, but your visit is only for two months ( 1 month tourist visa + 1 month extension) then you fly home to the passport issuing country. I'm old enough to remember when there wasn't such a rule.

The six- month passport validity rule is enforced because nations do not want to risk having travelers and tourists overstaying their passport validity. Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
One wonders what used to happen before the rule? Were the embassies taking all the flak for the occasional passport lapse? Poor dears.
I appreciate all the replies. Will try to get the ticket refunded. Don't have time for a new passport.

No, the airlines took the flack and had to pay a lot for every passenger they let through without documentation. They still do but they try to detect these cases before they get on a flight.JollyBee wrote: ↑Sat Apr 30, 2022 7:47 pmOne wonders what used to happen before the rule? The Philippines embassy here can help her get a new passport fairly quickly. Explain it to the company you bought the ticket from and change the date.

So they don't know how to do math... cause there's no chance of overstaying your passport validity when Vietnam only issues 30 day visas... smhLucky Lucan wrote: ↑Sat Apr 30, 2022 4:01 pmThe six- month passport validity rule is enforced because nations do not want to risk having travelers and tourists overstaying their passport validity. Obviously it's just another way to tighten the screws on the public, an all too common theme in the 21st Century, usually under the guise of fighting crime or drugs or pandemics or terrorism... and a decade later when the drug problem is worse than ever they'll demand you give up more freedoms...
Vietnam is going through a phase of being extremely obtuse with foreigners needing visas etc. I've just had lunch with an American couple who've been quietly living there for 15 years and have been suddenly informed they can only get a one-month tourist visa, after which they have to leave. They say the Vietnamese embassy here is full of distressed foreigners who just get shouted at and thrown out.
I don't know if there are political reasons (the PM just got ousted) or this is post-covid incompetence that will soon blow over.

It's been going on for a while, mate. There seems to be a prevailing anti-Western sentiment in the Vietnamese govt, which is ironic because there are so few Westerners who even want to be there in the first place and put up with all the sh-- you have to deal with over there. And on the other hand Vietnamese parents are begging for ESL teachers and businesses are desperate for tourists.guest9 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 19, 2023 4:00 pmVietnam is going through a phase of being extremely obtuse with foreigners needing visas etc. I've just had lunch with an American couple who've been quietly living there for 15 years and have been suddenly informed they can only get a one-month tourist visa, after which they have to leave. It's no loss for me though. I consider Vietnam to be a rather unpleasant place for Westerners. I'd much prefer to be in Cambodia.

It's not particular to Vietnam, a few other countries also stipulate that you need 6 months validity to enter. These for example:telescopic wrote: ↑Wed Jan 18, 2023 2:59 pmSo they don't know how to do math... cause there's no chance of overstaying your passport validity when Vietnam only issues 30 day visas... smhLucky Lucan wrote: ↑Sat Apr 30, 2022 4:01 pmThe six- month passport validity rule is enforced because nations do not want to risk having travelers and tourists overstaying their passport validity. If it's some amazing conspiracy to tighten the screws on the public it seems rather ineffective.

As far as service go's though, Vietnam is the Basil Faulty of SEA.
But maybe we can blame the French influence for that.
