Being richer or poorer than your parents
Being richer or poorer than your parents
There was an interesting news report in the UK this week saying that after centuries of each new generation largely being richer than the last - or their parents - this is now being reversed. Evidently, Brits born in the 1980s have an average net wealth today (including everything) of around 26kGBP, whereas those born in the 1970s had (at the same stage of their life ten years ago) were worth on average 54k. And also today there was a report which said that no few than 16 million Brits had savings less than 100 quid.
Needless to say the report blamed such things as rising house prices making it harder to get on the ladder, low interest rates and the demise of final salary pensions as being to blame, it also strikes me that the 1980s born are also much more profligate and keener to surround themselves with the latest gadgets, go on regular holidays and basically ignore saving now for the future.
Are you richer or poorer than your parents?

Poorer because I self indulged on living in the now and prioritised different things.
I can see how the figures are going to be twisted and completely ignore the accuracy of Scobie's comnent...

It's also predicted that it will be the first generation not to live longer than their parents.
Which is amazing when you consider the age we live and the gargantuan advances in economic efficiency and medical capabilities since the 60's.
Call me a conspiracy theorist, but one could almost imagine that there was a parasitic elite class rigging the game in their favour so the benefits of these advancements were massively distorted in their favour.

You're a conspiracy theorist.

My father was a multimillionaire by the time he was my age....I, unfortunately, am not, nor will be. I do expect to live longer though, but to what end, I am not sure...straw death does not appeal to me.

My parents did OK, but were not obsessed with money. Most of my friends and family make six figures, allows a good lifestyle, but it's not remarkable.
I have enough enough for a comfortable lifestyle, but have never aspired to be anything other than middle class.
People here tend not to inquire about others financial status nor talk about their own, it is considered to be quite rude.

People where? It's probably the most commonly talked about aspect of people's lives in Cambodia other than who is fucking who.David L wrote:My parents did OK, but were not obsessed with money. Most of my friends and family make six figures, allows a good lifestyle, but it's not remarkable.

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

I thought - ''You eat rice yet'', was the most talked about?
Or if they quite like you they just say you are now looking more fat?

i can earn twice as much as what my dad earns,
but our lifestyles and mindsets differ greatly,
while him at my age, was probably richer
i live a richer lifestyle,
my parents at my age had yet to travel abroad
where i have already visited 23 countries and lived in 3 of them
for me experiences/memories are richer than currency

Nothing but an opinionated tourist. The Pope spends more time in countries than I do ! It is also not my place to comment on a gentleman's dress. A real 23 minute wonder, that obviously knows little about ovens and cooking in Cambodia.

This is a noble sentiment but a little simplistic. It's impossible to have a decent quality of life without a number in the bank account. The days of living a life of quiet solitude are long over.EdinWigan wrote:This one is covered by Jamie:
