border buses
border buses
Not seen a great deal about cross border travel by land to Vietnam. I am planning a month in Cambodia in June and then plan to go to VN for about the same. I have been keeping my eyes open for updates but they seem few. Anyone know for certain if any of the usual companies like Mekong Express or Sorya are now back doing this route? I have heard of some ridiculous rates but I checked Mekong online and it was 12 bucks to Saigon, pretty much what it was 2 years back. Another reason to book is for a cheap onward ticket if I get some idiot at departure who doesn't know the rules. I can write it off if not used. TIA everyone.
Will be 28 months since my last visit!

Are you sure all Thai border crossings will be open (for foreigners)? I read a select few will be open.
Any foreigner staying over 2 days by land is required to do a rapid test. Arrivals by air: advised but not required. The Thai Pass system is still in effect + Covid insurance coverage.

No sure about foreigners, details are still sketchy.
But good news for Khmers as they'll definitely be able to travel by road again soon

That's great news about Thailand but doesn't exactly help me with my original question. Anybody?
I just called Kumho Samco 023 215 313.
Was quoted $75 (seventy-five dollars) for a normal seat on one of their dilapidated coaches PNH-HCM. Buses run every day.
Price January 2019 was $10.

There's no way locals would pay that kind of stupid fares. How about having a Khmer enquire for you?Was quoted $75 (seventy-five dollars) for a normal seat on one of their dilapidated coaches PNH-HCM. Buses run every day.
Nothing online yet?

Wow. Insane inflation. Thinking there is a greedy middleman or two.

Border crossings in the region are always abit of a scammy feel.
Vietnam border minibuses have the most unpleasant feel, out of the lot.
Better to fly. Hardly any difference price wise, and you get to sleep.

And you'd be able to chill after those 45 minutes, compared to being rocked around for hours on a border bus.Guest wrote: ↑Sun Apr 24, 2022 7:20 pmThe flight from PP to HCM only takes 45mins who the fuck goes to sleep on that flight?spitthedog wrote: ↑Sun Apr 24, 2022 6:44 pmBorder crossings in the region are always abit of a scammy feel.

That's what I was referring to. Insane prices, I cannot see that continuing as more travelers start arriving. Someone is taking the piss. If there is no change in 6 weeks I will be flying over.
I just spoke to a reputable visa agent about the current situation.
They told me that the new ticket price covers the costs that are handled by the bus company at the border, including a mandatory covid test.
This is a fiction of course, not blaming the agent for this. Perhaps it covers assistance in completing forms and registering with the Vietnamese government's tracking system, obtaining a sim, insurance etc.
Their price was $95 (with Kumho Samco).
The agent still isn't issuing Vietnamese visas, excepting the 'if you have a letter from a company' shenanigans.
Fwiw I called four other bus companies on various numbers: all were disconnected/unavailable, including Saigon offices.
NB Kumho Samco have moved their office in Phnom Penh, something they won't bother telling you if you book by phone.
Certainly the 'technically illegal' border traffic flow continues and the local commuters and regulars on both sides will come to their own informal arrangements with immigration control. But I doubt that being Khmer would get you a discount on a tourist bus ticket from Phnom Penh right now.
