Coming in December. Some questions/need advice
Coming in December. Some questions/need advice
I'm excited/nervous and haven't quite gathered my thoughts so please forgive me.
My work is allowing me to travel back to Cambodia in December since January is our busy time. Last time I was there for 12 days, this time I think I'll stay from the 2nd to the 19th. In addition to Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, which I visited last time, I've decided I want to visit Long Set Beach in Koh Rong. I've never seen white sand and it means a lot to me to experience it for the first time in Cambodia, and to do so before I'm 40. So I really want to make it happen. I've remained in touch with my Siem Reap tuk tuk driver, Pak, on Facebook since my last trip and I think he said he can drive me.
Also, last time I stayed with very kind and generous expats in Phnom Penh. This time I'll be in a hotel. Has anybody ever been to the Duong Chan hotel in Boeung Keng Kang? Cause that's where I'm thinking of staying since they have free cancellation, a pool and a complimentary breakfast. Or does somebody have a better choice?
Like last time, I plan to hit Phnom Penh and then Siem Reap. Would it be unwise to go from Siem Reap to Sihanoukville to get to Koh Rong? I could also make the best of a long road trip and stop to visit and see sights; has anybody done that before? Or, should I return to Phnom Penh and then go to the coast? That seems a little complicated. I'm just trying to come up with the best plan for the time I have.
As for Koh Rong, I keep reading they get you there from Sihanoukville on boats that are frequently late or unreliable. Has anybody done that before? Is there anything I should know? And has anybody been to Koh Rong, particularly Long Set Beach? I was originally going to Koh Rong Samloeun but changed my mind. Once I'm on Koh Rong, I want to stay at the BeachWalk which is new and kind of expensive. I'm willing to splurge because it's a new experience, plus the hotel has a shower with no ceiling and I love that. Has anybody stayed there before?
Will anybody be on Koh Rong in December?
I'm also a little nervous about being on some island by myself. I know it's probably irrational and yeah I've been lost at night in Detroit by myself trying to find my car with a dead phone, but still. This is literally going to be something I've never experienced anything like and I just don't want to do anything stupid. I often can't pick up on things so I'm nervous somebody might screw me over and rob me blind or something. Is there anything I should know about being on the islands in Cambodia?
Please feel free to offer any advice or suggestions or warnings.
Thanks.

No need to book or pay a deposit for a hotel room that you have never seen. Why not arrive and ask a taxi / tuk-tuk driver to take you to a recommended hotel / guest house , There are heaps to choose from.Nirvana wrote: ↑Wed Aug 31, 2022 6:12 amI'm excited/nervous and haven't quite gathered my thoughts so please forgive me.

Don't think I agree with this. Dealing with the related uncertainty sounds like an absolute headache after any flight, let alone an intercontinental one, not to mention the risk of being overcharged or sent to some rubbish place run by the driver's cousin. Better off just booking a room in advance and checking out the next day if it ends up being crap.Tootsfriend wrote: ↑Wed Aug 31, 2022 7:46 am

Agreed. I am sure it is no different from Siem Reap: ask the Tuk-tuk driver to take you to a hotel and it will be either a relative's hotel or one that pays a good commission. And the last thing I want to do after a 10+ hour flight is to put myself in the hands of some Tuk-tuk driver.Starving Pelican wrote: ↑Wed Aug 31, 2022 8:47 amDon't think I agree with this. 1st night book ur room via booking.com
than go explore nearby areas after you check in> If you really cant find anything else am sure you can extend ur visit
SR is dead currently, no idea about Jan but they are saying it might not be till 25/26 till the numbers in 2019 are repeated
Angkor without Chinese must be lovely
SR to Sihanoukville an than the ferry is a LONG trip

Book a minimum of 1 night at a 5 star that will pick you up at airport and make you look and feel like a king. You will want to crash for 12 hours - maybe more - so have a quick look at your room and if you like it, book your second night right then and there - they will usually give you the same price. Ask about free upgrades and also long stay pricing. Some are weird and will quote you higher than booking.com and tell you to sit in the foyer and book through the even though they would do better to deal with you directly.

Duang Chan Hotel is fantastic , I stayed there for 2 weeks a couple of months back . Try to get a room with a window because the other rooms , still good , face a wall . Can't fault the hotel including the location . They do a long stay monthly rate as well which might suit me next trip .

I know you have limited time, however one option is to have a stop over in Battambang on your way from Siem Reap to Sihanoukville.

The boats to and from Koh Rong turn up when they turn up but they’re normally close to schedule. The problem is that they’re either visible or out of phone signal coverage, but they do their thing so don’t worry too much about it.
Sok San beach resort is nice out there. No backpacker hippies or related safety problems and close to Royal Sands but without the extreme cost.

Soksan has a 45 minute speed boat that takes you to the island, they talk about it on their page https://www.facebook.com/soksanbeachnatureresort/
I've stayed, rooms and restaurant were nice however I was working so didn't get to see much else.
For Phnom Penh - If going to a hotel I am not familiar with sometimes I book 1-2 nights and extend once there.

My tuk tuk driver didn't like Chinese tourists either. What's up with that, what do they do?Phuket2006 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 31, 2022 11:44 amAngkor without Chinese must be lovely

I read that the trip from Siem Reap to Sihanoukville is like nine+ hours, which is much less than I thought. I do want to explore places along the way though. Just need to figure out the timing.
That's a good idea, thank you. I should probably figure out more places to see on the way.
