Old at heart backpacker here.
Was first in Cambodia in 2002, visited a few times since, and was in Kampot/ Kep last year,
Hoping to spend a little unwind time, reading a book, drinking a beer, seafood, getting a massage,
Will call by Kratie in a few weeks, but looking for a Island or smaller town (maybe Mekong linked) to hang out,
While not a hippie, I like that vibe, if understated and not party oriented
Any recommendations?

Any off beat backpacker vibe recommendations?

Kampong Cham isn't too far from Kratie or PP, Mekong, pretty relaxed town. Koh Kong city or Banlung, but a chore to get to, and dull during rainy season.
There's a backpacker/hippy commune near Sre Ambel, between Sihanoukville and Koh Kong. Said to be nice if that's your sort of thing. Called "Nesat village" or something similar.

Bringing the news. You stay classy, nas, Cambodia.
I'm not sure how off-beat these are, or how cool they might be however...

I really enjoyed it on the river up Pursat way. Some really relaxed spots and good bird watching.
You can always cross over into Laos too.

Chhlong is where you wanna go. It used to be an important trading post.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
I repectfuly think you'd struggle to cross into Laos easily from Pursat Rob W. I live here and Laos is some way off last I looked.

I was in Sa Dec last month. I met a SA TEFLer in January who had been working there: he said there were three foreign teachers in the town but that they didn't speak to each other. Everything was less than half the price it was in Saigon, not one white face in sight. If you’re a fan of 20th-century, Vietnam-born French writer Marguerite Duras (and why wouldn’t you be) you’ll want to visit Sa Dec where she lived and wrote The Lover.
Something of a pilgrimage for #MeToo, but sadly no sign of Jane Marsh
I was surprised to learn that her mother is Viet-Chinese.
Oops. Sorry, meant Stung Treng.Mr Pursat wrote: ↑Sat Jun 03, 2023 9:00 amI repectfuly think you'd struggle to cross into Laos easily from Pursat Rob W. I live here and Laos is some way off last I looked.

Meet some locals and hang out in the provinces with them is the best experience in my opinion. You only need a smile and a view words of Khmer to get by. I’ve stayed with friends or families in several areas and it is an awesome experience.
