Best Way to Break 100 Dollar Bills?
Anyone figured out a good way to break 100 dollar bills here in Phnom Penh? Buying a single bottle of water at the mini mart and forking over a $100 doesn't work. I know because I have tried a few times. The money changers want to charge me to make change. I hate to pay just to get change but maybe I will have to go that route if I can't find a way to do it for free.

It's not that hard these days. Do you ever buy anything that costs more than $5? Maybe you could combine a few items, like a pack of gum, newspaper, Clark Bar, and a Penthouse Forum.

Last time I changed 100 into half dollars half riel, it probably cost me less than 500rriverside130 wrote:Anyone figured out a good way to break 100 dollar bills here in Phnom Penh? Alternatively, withdraw riel from the ATM, usually they spit out 10k or 20k notes.
Or just withdraw $90 instead of $100 to get smaller denominations. Most money changers charge only about 500 riel or less to break a hundy, not really gonna break the bank is it. Or withdraw money from ATM connected to bank, then take hundys into bank and request smaller notes.

I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.

I usually just buy something and pay?
Occasionally, if like the op, I just want a bottle of water or something I ask to change $25 to riel.
Exchange rate is usually displayed so you know in advance what you are getting. Many places take 4000r to the dollar and no money is lost.
When you ask a changer to break a dollar into more dollars with no exchange to riel, there's no benefit for them to do so.
Break a percentage into riel and they earn a little from the transaction, everybody is happy.

1. Change $100 into riel in places that give a good rate (there are many near Kandal, Old and New markets). Avoid new money as rate is worse.
2. Check your money before you leave the counter.
3. Spend the riel, avoiding places that punish riel spenders by applying a rate worse than 4000 to $1.
4. Repeat as often as necessary.
5. When you go to an ATM, withdraw $90, or $190 etc.

New riel notes cost more than the used, shitty, meth-smoke soaked notes. Last time I bought riel, new notes were 4000/$1. Old ones were 4030/1$.gavinmac wrote:Can you elaborate on this?QED wrote: Avoid new money as rate is worse.
I'm guessing that this is what he means.

I & my staff change $ into riel regularly and have never been asked if I want old or new money at differing rates. I always get the advertised rate.
Sometimes if the notes are old I'll ask for newer or new ones - never any complaints.
This sound like a scam to take advantage of a naive foreigner.
They do charge a commission if the $ is old, ripped or crappy. This could be $2-5 for a $100 note depending on your negotiation skills. I know someone who accepted only $70 for an old $100 note - mug!

Yea, seriously, it's not hard at all. Treat yourself to a $5 lunch and it won't be a problem.gavinmac wrote:It's not that hard these days. Do you ever buy anything that costs more than $5? Maybe you could combine a few items, like a pack of gum, newspaper, Clark Bar, and a Penthouse Forum.
