After Japan, everywhere has more crime, but it's way better than South Africa (but then, so are most prisons)
Be aware and don't flash your wealth or watch-winder and you'll be fine.
As a married man, you should maybe be more concerned about all the hot young women setting your wife off.

ירי ילדים והפצצת אזרחים דורש אומץ, כמו גם הטרדה מינית של עובדי ההוראה.

I used to stay in BKK. The Riverside area is just one creepy, decrepit dude after another. I walked past Mekong River on St. 118 and the Riverside a few afternoons ago and there were seven occupied tables. Each one occupied by a down on his luck looking, middle aged white dude sitting alone drinking a beer.HsRob wrote:GM needs to stop hanging out in Larry's and on the riverside, jusssaying there is life beyond Daun Penh, TTP even has Starbucks nowLucky Lucan wrote:That's charming. I think it bothers me so much because I'm a middle aged white guy who would be drinking alone if I didn't have the extra cash to pay hostesses to sit with me and pretend to like me.

But I have to admit there is not many hostess bars outside of Daun Penh so you are unlikely to discover that there are other types of expats (not all necessarily good)
You could alternatively/additionally buy drinks for those middle aged lonely drinking guys on riverside to sit with you and pretend to be buddies. This way you will have almost complete social life
So I won't dress smart or rich or wear my watch to hopefully avoid the gunpoint stickups.
So most Cambodian people don't say a lot of racist things directly to foreigners or attack foreigners for being foreigners?
Of course I'm at least expecting shit talking about foreigners amongst the locals but that can't be avoided and happens everywhere you go. As long as it doesn't go beyond that.
It was a long time ago, but I remember reading about foreigners being assaulted by Cambodian locals...should I assume these foreigners committed crimes or were being cunts in general?

They say heaps of stuff that you might get offended by, but usually they don't mean to offend they just say things as they see, so "offensive" is the matter of perspective herewhiteboy wrote: So most Cambodian people don't say a lot of racist things directly to foreigners or attack foreigners for being foreigners?
Oh dude after living in Japan and China as well, I have experienced hearing some people saying some truly retarded and ignorant shit about foreigners.HsRob wrote:They say heaps of stuff that you might get offended by, but usually they don't mean to offend they just say things as they see, so "offensive" is the matter of perspective herewhiteboy wrote: So most Cambodian people don't say a lot of racist things directly to foreigners or attack foreigners for being foreigners?
What are some examples of the kind of garbage the locals spew there?
It varies between Japan and China.
In Japan, people are more gossipy and talk shit about foreigners while in China the racists/xenophobes actually do things like stare you down or actually flip you off lol.
they don't spew anything. For example, they would call you fat if you are fat, and loudly laugh at you in the clothing store if you ask for a size that they have never heard of. But all of it without any malice (usually).

Cambodians are pretty much the exact opposite of the Japanese in every meaningful way: dishonorable, untrustworthy, no manners, corrupt, poorly educated, etc. It's like comparing the Swiss with Somalians...the differences are so huge that there's really no point in even making the comparison.
