How do the locals and other foreigners in Cambodia treat you?
european foreigners i've met are pretty cool. austrailians i've met are a bit rude (backpacker types).
local vendors, at first try to gouge a bit, speak some khmer and they know better.
local khmer friends I know a while, it's hit or miss, i know the stereotypical types who always try to get one over you, but i eventually met a few who are cool (usually the more successful or hardworking ones).

Cambos, (sorry are we even allowed to say that here), if uneducated thickos will generally blurt out the first thing that crosses their transom. So if you walk down a street expect "barang, ooh barang" etc. Educated ones or those who interact more with westerners are generally fine.
Foreigners can be irritating as fug. Lots old white guys trying to look less dodgy than they are down 172 and Riverside way. Aged hipsters round ballsack lane sucking on expensive bottled beer and trying to look like they are in an advert for GQ. Outliers in TTP area eking out the dregs from their draft swill.

I think he already does as Mrs. Helen Sharpe. The lady selling all the empty coffee jars for $1.50 each.vm varga wrote:. You should probably try posting over on Cambodia Parents Network.gavinmac wrote:jello-headed crybaby.
Nothing really to add for the op. Some people love it here, or at least say they do, whilst others seem to hate it. Better come and find out which one you are.
So they are opposite of Japanese people in every way huh?MONEYBACKGUARANTEE wrote:Cambodians are pretty much the exact opposite of the Japanese in every meaningful way: dishonorable, untrustworthy, no manners, corrupt, poorly educated, etc. It's like comparing the Swiss with Somalians...the differences are so huge that there's really no point in even making the comparison.
So that must mean Cambodians don't gossip and act passive aggressive/racist/xenophobic toward foreigners?
Good to know.
What do you mean passive aggressive? Any examples?whiteboy wrote:So they are opposite of Japanese people in every way huh?MONEYBACKGUARANTEE wrote:Cambodians are pretty much the exact opposite of the Japanese in every meaningful way: dishonorable, untrustworthy, no manners, corrupt, poorly educated, etc. It's like comparing the Swiss with Somalians...the differences are so huge that there's really no point in even making the comparison.

Yes, sure I can give many examples:
When walking around in public around groups of Japanese people I often hear them talking shit about foreigners or me in Japanese. I can understand the language pretty well.
These are some things I hear them say almost everyday:
何それ?What's that?
何これ?What's this?
全然わかんない I don't understand it at all (context: I don't understand at all why a foreigner is here in Japan)
気持ち悪い creepy
きもい gross
怖いい顔 scary face
変な顔 weird face
めんどくさい annoying
Other nonverbal xenophobic behaviors would be:
An odd/fake sounding cough when a foreigner is around. It seems to let other Japanese people know there is a foreigner present or it could be to express displeasure.
Doing a fake looking yawn almost on command after making eye contact with a foreigner. It almost seems to express that they find you boring.
Sucking their teeth at you when you are around them to express you piss them off and disgust them by just being a foreigner.
Spitting on the ground in front of you or near your feet (Usually older businessmen are the ones that do this).
Avoiding you. Not sitting near you on the subways/trains, not wanting to even enter/exit the subways/trains from the same doorway as you. Pretending to come and sit next to/near you and then suddenly changing their mind and going to sit far away from you.
Japanese people are passive aggressive, so if they are racist/xenophobic they are never going to come right out and say something like "Hey, go back to your country!"
They will do a lot of these strange behaviors and talk shit on you and all foreigners in Japanese though.

Somehow I can relate to that.whiteboy wrote:Yes, sure I can give many examples:

Everybody's sensitivity is different on that matter. Casual racism is everywhere (and some people feels it more than another).
I think that Korea and Japan are way similar towards "foreigners".
@whiteboy : So how does it feel to be a "gaijin" ? Seems, you're not taking it to the heart that much as you're still living in Japan.
Many years ago I went to Japan with my then-girlfriend. We stayed at her mother's house for a few days. One night she informed me (via my girlfriend) with a straight face that "I didn't smell as bad as she thought I might". I thanked her for the very kind compliment.
I have considered this but it isn't just me because I have had at least three other foreign friends of mine report to me about experiencing this same behavior from Japanese people.epidemiks wrote:Ever considered that maybe it's just you?
I used to say most Japanese people are cool but I experience this shit everyday multiple times, so I can confidently say about half of Japanese people are cool with foreigners and the other half are racist or at least xenophobic.Marinaris wrote:Somehow I can relate to that.whiteboy wrote:Yes, sure I can give many examples:

It has made me a stronger person and being targeted daily like this definitely gives you thick skin.
I don't let these retards ruin my days anymore. I used to sometimes get confrontational, but these losers aren't worth my time.
I just focus on the cool people in my life that matter.

Cambodia has a lot of streetlife, and idle or bored people have a lot of time to chit-chat and poke fun. I think it's great when you compare it with the sterile environments most western cities have become. In general Cambodians are very welcoming to foreigners. I have never felt "targeted", that's a strange concept. You are actually unusual in a Japanese environment, so will of course get more attention. How you react to that is what will make a difference. Get a thicker skin and develop a thousand-yard-stare, you are probably tall enough to manage that.whiteboy wrote: I used to say most Japanese people are cool but I experience this shit everyday multiple times, so I can confidently say about half of Japanese people are cool witg foreigners and the other half are racist or at leaat xenophobic.

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Exactly, I have been developing thicker skin day by day and I definitely have the thousand-yard-stare down.
What surprises me most is that a third world country like China actually has more friendly people than Japan, which is supposed to be the "better" country lol.
Then again, China just has more people in general.
Good to know most Cambodian people are friendly to foreigners.
