I'm already losing hope but here comes my last try: how about to open a restaurant?
The only guns around will be pea guns, and no pea mash with the imported Alaskan cob. White waste will be returned to the door immediately upon request in the event of misbehaviour.

‘Make sure you have your business license and paperwork.’root wrote: ↑Wed Jun 01, 2022 8:18 pmForgot it in my previous post, regarding this:
"There are people here running businesses which help consumers order stuff from China, they organize payment and delivery. These are decent little businesses for now but some are informal and the other ones seem a little chaotic. Perhaps that could be an option."
Be careful that when you undertake this on any scale you have your business license and supported paperwork. A friend of mine is currently in detention. He did do a similar thing between Cambodia and a third country. Money moved between his Cambodian and foreign account (couple of hundred k usd). This had been flagged by the bank and now he is in detention sorting this shit out with a lawyer. Phnompenhpost recently posted an article Cambodia is increasing anti-money laundry policies so this might be the result.
Surely good advice for any business startup, not just the one I suggested. Unless there are some where you don’t need any docs…

Yeah maybe too harsh/blunt.Guest wrote: ↑Wed Jun 01, 2022 10:13 pmផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote: ↑Wed Jun 01, 2022 3:58 pmSo in summary, you are extremely intelligent, like a higher intellect than most other people.
You will make a success of anything you try because of said intellect.
I wonder how, with someone so clever and prone to being successful that at 50 years old you when you sell up everything to move here you’ll only be able to scrape together around $39,000.
It doesn’t quite add up so I suggest that perhaps you aren’t as great as you think you are, or maybe you are just trolling.
Beltei it will be.
Harsh but true and I was just thinking the same thing. The OP is keen to point out repeatedly how intelligent and fascinating he is, yet he comes to Cambodia with pocket change at the age of 50.
But it got a bit tiresome with him telling us how he will be a sure-fire success, cos he his so smart… when he hasn’t yet met this success in 30 years of adult life.
Jokes, or shootings? I think there's been another shooting - a repeater you might say.Jack Frost wrote: ↑Wed Jun 01, 2022 11:29 pmthe problem when waiting for the appropriate amount of time before making a mass shooting joke is that there will have already been another 10+ since that one.

To the OP.
None of the responders to my knowledge have run a restaurant in Cambodia, few have run business'.
If you think you can do it, just do it. Asking advice from anonymous people is not really great research.
Find a need and fill it. But you can not do this from China.
What you really need to do is ascertain your target market and make sure it is large enough and affluent enough to provide an adequate customer base.
Just realise this. Doing business in Cambodia is not easy. Getting good reliable staff that can think like you do and have initiative is nearly impossible.
Many have tried what you are enquiring about, but few have succeeded.
Your money, your choice, just back yourself and have an exit plan and back up funds.

There are indeed ways to make money in Cambodia.
I know a guy used to run a successful hotel in Sihanoukville. He was not making a fortune but not losing money either. He then hit the jackpot when the Chinese invaded and offered him riches beyond measure to take him over.
Now our baller is semi retired and spends his time golfing around the best places in southeast Asia.

@Laudjohn find a need and fill it.
Yes, best if it is something hard to replicate, requires specififc knowledge or generates money fast. The problem is your ideas will be copied. Price is number one for most Khmer so it is a race to the bottom. Only few will value decent service / product. So when they are able to undercut you there is no way to win.
My wife runs a restaurant and 30k in PP will be gone fast... Rent deposit, remodel/inventory/stock, various licenses (business,, tourism, hygiene, alcohol), taxes (signs, monthly district tax, yearly tax), promotion and commission (foodpanda etc) For all of this most Khmer are able to negotiate better rates or pay some unofficial fees....
Daily operations have to be micro managed if you want anything resembling Western quality/service. A reason I try to get less involved and do something entirely different.
You cannot own real estate so you're at the mercy of a landlord which might or might not work out well. Scope locations as parts of the city flood.
My 2 cents: start as delivery only, heavy promotion and niche product. Also see if you can supplement it with any online work e.g. teaching / workshop in an area you have specific knowledge of. Get settled here and look how things work, opportunities, etc.

You’re competing with everyone else via NHAM24, Foodpanda, EGets etc.
Niche product = tiny market sector. Your customer base won’t order delivery only.
Heavy promotion = see above, to whom by whom and how?
Fail.
