Shaving thread (Gillette & more)
Shaving thread (Gillette & more)
A bit of an odd one I know, and a bit of a multi-question post, so here goes ...
Is anyone anyone else struggling to get hold of replacement Gillette Mach 3 razor blades? I checked out Thai Huot, Bayon & Aeon Mini up here in Toul Kork and couldn't find a thing for the last 1-2 months, so my backup supplies are reaching critical levels.
Two things I did notice however, Gillette seem to have a 'new' razor out here (Fusion?) which is available, but I'm struggling with buying a new razor as I have a custom handle of sentimental value that I've used for two decades that fits the Mach3 refill blades. I hated the Mach3 when it came out and replaced the 2 blade "Sensor/Excel". It felt like rubbing your face with a floppy cheese grater versus the precise Sensor stiff neck/two blades, but I got used it over the years. The second thing, the last set of Mach3 blades I have seem to be blunt, they are brand new, out of the official packaging, but methinks there is an unscrupulous plan here for Gillette to get everyone to say the Fusion is a better shave, when all they've done is taint the last year or so of the Mach3 blades, hurrumph at that conspiracy theorists!
Last part, one a recommendation, and a last question;
Recommendation: Maca Root shaving cream from The Body Shop (Aeon2), I used this stuff way back when I came here & thankfully now can get it here instead of on my annual trip to Europe; if you are using that canned spray stuff that lasts a week, do yourself a favour and switch; one pot of this stuff will last me the best part of 6 months, a year when I'm not shaving every day - grab yourself a brush & thank me later.
Final question; where to buy a traditional cut-throat razor in town? Before Gillette introduce a new revolutionary 5 blade cheese grater, I thought I'd give an old school razor a go again, but can't find any in supermarkets. Looks like blades for such razors could also be hard to find, so any tips from any of you Malboro Man types would be appreciated.

Do you mean a cut throat or a safety razor?
I am sure I saw some Gillette replaceable blades at mini Aeon in Chroy Changvar.

if you get the Gillette Mach from Ali express the blade that comes with the handle was good. the replacement pack of blades not usable at all... this was the experience of two others as well.
I have found 2 blade disposable bic's to be surprisingly good.. make sure its the bic's there are similarly packed ones that are usless/

Amazon?
I’ve noticed, not just in Cambodia, but UK and places in Europe, where supplies on shelves of certain blades tend to frequently run very low, or completely out. More so since COVID, but it was happening before, too. I have several Mach3-turbo handles, and I was buying refills in bulk, and splitting the supplies up between locations- my regular luggage, bathroom at home, etc to avoid running out.
Alternatively, find someone heading back to Phnom Penh from abroad? I’m not due back for a while, but I do bring a couple of cherished items for one or two folk when I fly home.
As for a decent straight razor- how about the knife shop on the end of st110? I’m guessing as I’ve not looked as such. I’ve been tempted a few times, but travel restrictions preclude it, anyway.
The loose blade/straight razor type, I’ve no idea, but all the barbers seem to use them.

7-11s stock blades for safety-razors. Useable for about five shaves. But they're seriously cheap. Haven't bought a rip-off cartridge for decades.
Personna Platinum DE Razor Blades are my favs. German made. Lucky also have Gillettes (for safetys).

The cut throats take the double sided safety razors, split in two.
Not seen any good brands of blades here but I do have a few Wisamet Super Iridium, the original not the later ones, from Russia, the best blades ever produced.

Something to factor in is the prevalence of fake blades in circulation. Not that they are necessarily inferior to originals, but they could be. As with guitar strings it becomes a trade off between price and how long they will perform adequately.
Perhaps unsurprisingly there has been an explosion in the availability of counterfeit products here in recent years. We're seeing it in wine now.
Manufacturers suppress evidence of this because they know it hurts their brands. Nor can they openly circulate information on how to spot all fakes, as this would be like giving a cheat sheet to the counterfeiters.
I believe Gillette originally found that twin-blade razors were only a substantial improvement if the blades opposed each other, necessitating an up and down motion like brushing you teeth. As in many industries they have resisted technical advances that might reduce obsolescence and repeat sales of their products.
Given that so much is now made in China it's tempting to think that everything is a copy, but that some fakes may be better than others.

It amazes me the amount of seconds or downright fake stuff is here. JBL, Iphones (saw some chick flashing her Iphone X, one week after it was launched, and after I looked it had Android OS on it!) clothing etc. We buy kids clothing and the logo or design is always upside down which is why I think it's been rejected from the factory.
Years ago back home a mate bought his Stihl chainsaw for me to look at as it was new and he got it cheap, as I used to repair them back in the day. So within about 30 seconds I realised it was fake, the chain brake didn't even work, it wasn't even made to work. The engine was a Chinese brand and the chain was fractured. He was devastated. He took it to a local dealer who confirmed it was fake (actually the company I used to work for) and they would not give it back to him, but they did offer him 50% off a new one, which was pretty good.
Back on topic. I've used double edged blades for about 15 years but even now still cut myself so I just went to disposables!

tbh, I always found that BIC made excellent, cheap disposable razors.
A lot of the fans of other overpriced stuff have OCD and are a tad too narcissistic, imo.

I've tried BIC disposable razors once and threw away the whole package but maybe that's because I have a manly beard.
In the past I also had some bad experiences with GILETTE razor blades and I thought this was because they were made in China, or maybe were counterfeit blades, if those actually exist.
Afterwards I always checked were the blades were made.
