Renew Expired Khmer driving licence
If you've ever had a local licence they will know about it and you will get fined even if you do a 10 year one.
Wow, this is news to me. I left cambodia six years ago and licence has been expired since I guess around early 2017. I was planning on returning to live semi permanently in around 15 years time.
It sounds like the only option is to pay the 500r per day fine... How do they know someone has had a licence in the past? If you come in on a new passport number and licence number from home country has also changed, would this circumvent them matching it with an expired Cambodian one?

I believe that the fine is capped, but can't remember exactly at what figure, will try and find the official notice which outlined the policy. I know ow one person who was out of the country and couldn't get back during Covid and had to pay over 2 years worth of fines.
I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.
Thanks for the reply PSD, hopefully there is a cap! I just worked out that I would be paying about 300US in fines if I extended in the next year or so. Not ideal.
I guess an IDP would work out better if i currently only visit Cambodia for 2-3 weeks a year. Are IDP accepted by police when pulled over or do they make it a hassle?

My 1 riel worth
What a fucking stupid policy to fine someone for not renewing his license?
if its expired, so be it, Why can't i just renew without being fined?
Whats the purpose other than $$$$$$$
Legally my 5 year Thai license is legal to drive in Cambodia cause of ASEAN> BUT if stopped i'd say 40 % of the time they fine me for something
last time in my thai car, it was for having front tinted windows, $10

"We are turning into a nation of whimpering slaves to Fear—fear of war, fear of poverty, fear of random terrorism, or suddenly getting locked up in a military detention camp on vague charges of being a Terrorist sympathizer." HST
That's what my thoughts were Phuket, even if say an ASEAN country licence or IDP is legal, you'll be more likely to receive some sort of hassle with a licence like that.
Still, if insurance will.cover me with an IDP its probably cheaper overall using that rather than paying an expiry fine and renewing the licence each year anyway.

The fine is capped at 30 days if I recall well.
After that you pay the max. fine + application fee for a new license which is 60.000r extra (180k vs 120k). You also need to provide full documentation incl. proof of residence. That's not needed for a renewal unless you've moved.
Wow damn everything was so wrong for me applying for a 10 year license as a Cambodian American. I needed a birth certificate and identification verified from the district office, sala khan/krong. Fees weren’t capped, my license was expired since 2016 so I owed over 300. I also needed to turn in my old license or get a form filled at the police station.
Aeon 2 is accepting Chinese applicants so come early, they’ll get a bunch of tickets for their friends or any random Chinese that comes in after you. The workers will close down for foreigners if there are too many. But they will open back up if they move fast or applicants don’t have the required documentation so they leave quickly.
It was kinda funny watching the workers get frustrated telling them it was closed for foreigners until after lunch at 1, then their interpreters would just get a ticket for Khmer citizens and have to be told again.

I was told there was a cap on renewal fees, it's like no more than 6 months or so. Is there a real written law on the matter somewhere?
