You can extend a tourist visa in country for 30 days for something like $45. If you have to leave and come back I don't think its a big issue but you should think about getting an E-class or ordinary visa on return, it gives you more options for extensions.

As per Mike's comment, you can apply for 1x 1 month Extension of Stay of your T-type (Tourist) Visa, giving you a total period of stay of 2 months. $30 directly at the DoI Visa Office opposite PP Airport, or $45 - 55 via a Visa agency.
Visa runs no issue, you can leave and return on the same day and get a new T-type (Tourist) Visa, however if you plan on staying longer than 2 months, get the E-type (Ordinary) Visa, as there are longer Extension of Stay options available.

thanks for your helpful replies
it looks like i will get an extension. if my visa expiry is on august 14, when would you recommend going into immigration to get the extension?

okay, i have to make an amendment to what i wrote earlier:
i looked at the actual visa in my passport
at the top of the visa it says, "extension of stay" and then in the lower left corner it reads "EG." so, i was mistaken in saying it was a tourist visa. you see, i was on an EB visa prior to this visa and then converted to the visa i currently have
so, my question is, does this change my situation?? can i extend this visa, or will i have to leave cambodia and then come back in again?

Well yes, that is an important detail, it is also important that you know, and understand your Immigration status when in a foreign country.
You will still need to do a Visa run as the EG (General) Extension of Stay can not be extended, and you cannot convert to a different EOS category from an EG EOS.
So depending on how long you plan on staying for, and for what purpose, will dictate the Visa type you need to get on arrival when you return.

any advice about which country to run to?
i think vietnam is out of the question because americans need to have a visa to go there
so that leaves thailand and laos
also, will i get any hassle from immigration if i leave and come right back in across the border?
also, what are my visa options when i come back to cambodia?

I am confused!
In one thread you say you were having trouble finding employment as a teacher but you don't appear to have had the correct visa to seek employment and perhaps that is why you couldn't find work.
You have been told twice at the beginning of this thread which visa to get , go back and read it again.
Assuming you are in PP then a flight to Thailand is the easiest but perhaps an expensive option. Koh Kong by land is the nearest border crossing but I would recommend staying a night or two on the other side just to recover from the journey. If you are in Siem Reap then there are much easier land crossings at O Smach and Poi Pet.
And yes, theoretically you can just cross the border grab a coffee and cross back into Cambodia.

k440, something to do when you're pissed.
Cambodian Immigration Officers at land borders now demand an Exit Stamp from the country you supposedly just came from, so the days of just exiting, chilling out with a beer in no-mans land, then returning are over. Fear not though, as there are plenty of fixers at the border who will get you sorted for an extra $10. However, I'd take Horaces advice and spend a night or two in Thailand, or more, make a holiday out of it.
As I've already told you in a previous comment, if your intention is to stay here more than 2 months, then you need to get the E-type (Ordinary) Visa on Arrival, if you're only coming for maximum 2 months and don't intend on seeking employment, then just get the T-type (Tourist) Visa.

In 2017 I cycled across the border at Tinh Bien and somehow managed to go all the way across into Cambodia (Phnom Den) missing both border checkpoints. It wasn't until after a couple of KMs when I saw Cambodian beer signs and a sign post that I realised my mistake. Had to wake up sleeping borders guards and got stamped out of Vietnam with a fair bit of annoyance from them but not as much as the Cambodian official who stamped me in wearing just a vest and Y fronts!

"We are turning into a nation of whimpering slaves to Fear—fear of war, fear of poverty, fear of random terrorism, or suddenly getting locked up in a military detention camp on vague charges of being a Terrorist sympathizer." HST
Sorry OP, slightly different subject.
This onward flight thing definitely works everywhere?
The last few times special friend entered the UK she did so on a one way ticket, but we travelled together. Once the border guy in London asked if she had a return and she just said we don't know when we're going back exactly and he was fine.
This time we're travelling separately and I'm more concerned about the airline than Heathrow immigration, but they might get shitty too.
Surely every authority knows about these, basically bullshit, booking websites by now?
