Has anyone shipped personal items from New Zealand/Australia to Cambodia?
We’re moving to Cambodia later this year and want to ship 4-5 boxes of up to 100kgs. I know there have been threads here suggesting if you’re moving to Cambodia don’t ship anything you’re not willing to lose and that basically you should dump everything and buy what you need once you arrive, and not to bring anything that won’t survive the climate. All well and good but there are somethings I don’t want to part with for sentimental reasons and others I’d prefer not to be buying again.
I’ve enquired at shipping agents here in NZ and one or two elsewhere but they either don’t ship personal items (just commercial); or if they do ship personal items, they aren’t interested in a shipment of less than a cubic metre like ours as it’s not worth it - fair enough. A couple of shipping agents recommended maybe using air freighters like DHL (outrageously expensive) or Fedex (less than outrageous but still expensive).
I’m prepared to entertain shipping through a third port if necessary, like Bangkok or HCMC, or as far afield as Singapore, and then making separate arrangements if possible. I would prefer not to have to deal with Cambodian customs at all, I’d like the agent(s) to do that. I did contact a Bangkok firm that does truck runs into Cambodia and will handle customs (from a thread here) but got no reply from them.
Another option would be an airline that gives generous baggage allowances like China Eastern (as there’s two of us 2 X 23kgs each), but this invariably means a 14-hour stopover in Shanghai. Another option might be to fly to HCMC and then get the bus to PP but there’s the risk of tangling with customs at Bavet who may want to charge for even used personal items. My partner is Cambodian so could handle the language but as soon as they see a foreigner all kinds of ideas might pop into their head.
Any thoughts?
Cheers
Big Bill.
