Looking for a gym
I’m looking to use a gym for weights. Basic is fine. I’d rather pay as you go as opposed to time-based membership. I’d prefer not to join The Place or Club Fitness at the Cambodiana or others of a similar ilk. I’m not bothered if it’s got air-con though it would be a bonus if it did. A good selection of free weights first and foremost and then any working machines. I can recall a gym between 51 and Norodom for a dollar a pop back in the day. Lots of bodyguards would go there. Not sure that’s still going but something like that is all I want. A man of simple needs, that’s me.
Cheers.
Cheers.

Phnom Penh is a big place. Cambodia is even bigger.
Any clues on preferred location?

Elite Fitness have gyms all over town, relatively unknown to expats I think, but pretty decent from my observation & pay as you go entry allowed:

The gym area is decent. But the one I checked out a couple of years ago had really awful changing and shower facilities. The one I looked at was at Steung meanchey.Spigzy wrote: ↑Thu Apr 25, 2024 9:21 amElite Fitness have gyms all over town, relatively unknown to expats I think, but pretty decent from my observation & pay as you go entry allowed:

If, like me you’d want to exercise on way to work or nip out to gym at lunchtime then you’d need to forgo a shower and stink the rest of the day,
I don’t know if it’s representative of all locations though.

Just Phnom Penh. It's not that big. Depends what you're used to. In short, options limited to PP.
Big Bill doesn't travel that far.

It's a big spread between Pochentong to Chamkar Doung to Chbar Umpov to Chroy Chongvar to Daun Penh to Russey Keo to Sensok.
No point (IMO) of recommending somewhere that it will take you an hour to travel to and from.

Phnom Penh is a relatively small city, around 270 sq kms or for arguments sake 16 kms x 17 kms. Bill might be from LA where that's just a short run down to the mall.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote: ↑Thu Apr 25, 2024 2:27 pmIt's a big spread between Pochentong to Chamkar Doung to Chbar Umpov to Chroy Chongvar to Daun Penh to Russey Keo to Sensok.

That’s true, I’m not really thinking geographical spread, was more travel time and how miserable it is stuck in traffic in heat/rain if on moto or for hours in a car. Very different to (longer) travel in a country with better developed travel infrastructure.Dylan Quint wrote: ↑Thu Apr 25, 2024 2:44 pmPhnom Penh is a relatively small city, around 270 sq kms or for arguments sake 16 kms x 17 kms. But maybe that is less significant to others than it is to me.

I’ll be based out near the airport at Pochentong off Street 1091 (Phnom Penh Hanoi Friendship Boulevard) but travelling to Riverside near the Palace 2-3 times a week. Somewhere near either of those places or points in between would be fine. Anyone know what the rates at Elite are (for a one-off or out of interest, 6, 12 months)?

I think you.can buy a card for 10 entries for something like $30. That was a few years ago (and I may be remembering wrongly)Bill Shakey wrote: ↑Fri Apr 26, 2024 7:29 amI’ll be based out near the airport at Pochentong off Street 1091 (Phnom Penh Hanoi Friendship Boulevard) but travelling to Riverside near the Palace 2-3 times a week. Thanks very much. Dara and Dyvith both seem close by. I'll check them out and Elite as well.

As others have suggested Elite is well worth a try . It’s $3 visit $35 month and gets to be good value if you go six or twelve months .
They have gyms all over town . The equipment is as good as you get some have machines that the others don’t but it’s ok to attend any of them with the membership.
No air con if that’s an issue but good fans .
I’m a member and very happy with the gym.
Another plus is the cafes on site with good food .

Thank very much.
Do you know if you join one Elite gym can you also use the others, or are they all separate?
I have checked out their “websites” but they’re just Facebook pages. I don’t do Facebook so the information is largely inaccessible plus much that I could see is in Khmer, which I don’t read. I could get the missus to pick through it but from what I saw it looked to be mainly advertising.
Cheers.
