I used to love Len Deighton, and others, too, but John Le Carre took the genre to a very high level.

Greene did it better and way before le Carre. And then there was Conrad, John Buchan, Erskine Childers and even Maugham who wrote in the genre. How about Leslie Charteris and the Saint series? O Henry, Eric ambler and even figures like William Le Quex and E Phillips Oppenheim.
