Out of curiosity I watched Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, it's like Jane Austen on steroids with Germaine Greer using napalm to burn bras and bros.
Entertaining, well-made, but too predictable.

Ha ha, I just downloaded a passable camera-held torrent last night - next on the list! Don't worry about spoilers if you see it before i get round to it - that's not exactly it's selling-point!GMJS-440 wrote:I have that on que for tonight, with the other option being Ava's possessions.vladimir wrote:Out of curiosity I watched Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, it's like Jane Austen on steroids with Germaine Greer using napalm to burn bras and bros.

Scarily enough, I scribbled a review of Macbeth (2015) just a few hours ago, which I was meaning to put up:
It somehow seems to have a more ‘Scottish feel’ than Polanski’s (1971), helped by the spoken accents and the background music. It takes rather a few too many liberties with the text, but some of the additions are nice little touches, such as starting off with a son being buried by Mac & Lady M.
I also like the fact that the supernatural elements are more shadowy, less reliant on special effects – the witches look and sound like ordinary people and the ‘Is this a dagger’ scene has a flesh-and-blood-looking apparition holding the dagger that ‘marshall’st’ the way to Duncan’s chamber. When she receives the letter from her husband announcing his new status as Thane of Cawdor, Lady M (Marion Cotillard) prays in a suitably satanic looking chapel, urging dark powers to ‘unsex me here.’
In a delightful piece of directorial liberty, a morose looking child frequently, if fleetingly, appears as a motif throughout the movie. Moreover, the ending sees Malcolm purposefully marching out of the castle, while Fleance charges into the distance wielding his sword – highly suggestive of an unstable future for Scotland.
Macbeth (Michael Fassbender) positively oozes brooding melancholy, though some of the characters seem slightly lacking in depth, such as Banquo & Macduff (through no fault of the actors’).
On the first viewing, I was a wee bit disappointed, but watching it again this morning, I’ll revise my appraisal to 4 out of 5, thus disproving that ‘what is done cannot be undone’.

Disgrace, with John Malkovich, about white farmers in the new South Africa being intimidated.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0445953/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
The book by JM Coetzee was masterful a la Jude (Thomas Hardy) but extremely depressing: I'm waiting until I'm surrounded by potheads on ecstasy before I watch this.

Only watched it once, but I can go along with all of that. I did find that kid bloody confusing though. The only real issue that I have is that I thought MacBeth descended into madness too quickly, or abruptly. This is where Polanski's unprecedented method of having long long periods of no dialogue was so powerful, for me.

Like you, andy, I actually prefer Polanski's take. Perhaps I'm old-fashioned, but I like the fact that anyone could watch Polanski's movie and understand it, while I reckon it would be unlikely for a 'novice' to get that much out of the 2015 version without an understanding of the text. Some lovely touches, though.
I can't help but see a link with 'Exodus, God's & Kings' (Ridley Scott, 2014) in which a malevolent, nasty child is presented as 'God'.

The Last Valley (1971), Michael Caine, Omar Sharif, an adaptation of the novel by James Clavell, a story of the evil religious fundamentalism can bring...and yes, dudes, we 're talking so-called Christianity here.
Great film.

The Lady in the van
About some old vagrant lady who annoys the shit out of everyone in a 1970s Camden street by illegally parking her van in the front of her their houses. She dies in it eventually.
The end.

Just saw The Man Who Would be King again after many years. I absolutely LOVE this film. I sorta imagine His Lordship and myself going out this way...if we lived here back then.
This film, as well as Apocalypse Now, influenced me the most to head to the "mysterious East" and make trouble or die trying making a name for myself. The West holds nothing for me, other than an audience for my tales.
I need to get my Montagnard hooker army together again and fuck shit up in the bush....I'm getting bored.

Ha! Indeed, great film, Connery and Caine are brilliant.
Bogart apparently wanted to star in the film.
I think you will enjoy The Last Valley, Felger. It's on kat, but not many seeds.

Violent Shit: The movie
Gratuitous violence and cheesy lines from an Italian B grade producer, the only notable departure being the very well-produced soft-porn orgy scene
